TTC third baby. Hoping for (another) girl. My other 2 girls have slightly unusual but pretty names and need something that 'goes' (so am not considering things like Rachel, Anna, Chloe etc) pretty as they may be. What do you think......or are Topaz and Wallis a stretch too far? My DH also likes Cameron (for a girl) - he wanted it for DH1 and 2, but I didn't go for it.

wallis sounds like walrus

if you want w's what about Willa?

Cameron is ok

what about Calista?

zazen · 31/07/2008 12:23

Calista is lovely - I know a little boy who's Calisto.
I like Willa - after the author Willa Carter, but she'd be called willy.

Wallis after wallis simpson? nice enough, but she'll be called primark!

Topaz - semi precious stone, and exotic dancer - call her Jenna and be done with it!

Beryl is another name for Emerald, but is a bit Battle Of The Blitz. Ruby is lovely also if you want to stick to stones.

To me Cameron is one of those LA boys/girls/ androgynous names, camera-on. David Cameron might be next PM, would you really do that to a little girl though?

But then don't listen to me - we nearly called our DD Brunhilde, or Hildegard, in the end we didn't call her what we had decided upon: Solange - Sun Angel - as she didn't look like it at all, we opted for a more traditional French name, which suits her perfectly.

Good luck with the ttcing - friends of mine have had a boy after two girls - they opted for a very 'sedate' name for the boy after two lovely names for the older girls....

Lizzylou · 31/07/2008 12:27

OOh, yes Thea. T'was my girls name for DS2.
I know what you mean about wanting 3 same-sex children, if I was to have another child I'd want a boy, I am not planning on a third though!

QuintessentialShadows · 31/07/2008 15:23

Yes Linnea. It has an accent over the e. , so pressure is on the e. linn-eh-a

frazzledoldbag34 · 31/07/2008 15:27

Oh dear sorry - Calista just makes me think of super-waif Calista Flockhart! Couldnt bring myself to call a child after her.

Lizzylou - we weren't planning on a third either! Although I'd always wanted 3, we had agreed after the last one that THAT WAS IT!
Not sure what's happened but DD2 is approaching 2yrs old and DH and I are both broody (very suddenly).
Maybe because DD2 is just so cute (as well as so, so naughty).....
So it's going to be a summer s**g fest on our hols next week!!!!! (Sorry - is that too much info???!!!)

Anyway my point being never say never!

Keep the suggestions coming though - its great hearing all these opinions........although not sure if it's helping me decide or just confusing!

Sorry Quintessential. But that would just remind me of that clothing line in Debenhams (linea?)

Although I'm one to talk, with Wallis!

OP posts:
QuintessentialShadows · 31/07/2008 15:32

Just thought I should offer one in the same genre!

On a serious note. Linnea is an artic mountain flower, discovered by botanist Carl Von Linne. It is truly beautiful. Linnea Borealis

frazzledoldbag34 · 31/07/2008 15:40

OOh yes just had a look. Really pretty. But still, makes me think of Debenhams! (which reminds me of a friend of mine who had 'Debenham' on her short list for a boy!) Thankfully it was a girl.

Anyway so to recap I STILL like Topaz,
but also like

Christabel
Annabella / Annabelle
Thea
Felicity
Margeaux (or do I?)
Rosie (but can't have it cos already two in the family - bummer)
Daisy (but DH hates it)
Bay
Blair

Gone off Wallis. Phew.
And Cameron.

Amber is nice too!

I shall sod off now, with my clothes lines, an' all!

rowingboat · 31/07/2008 15:58

I like Wallis and Cameron - for girls, makes a change.
Wallis has a nice ring to it, and I doubt many of the child's peers will have heard of Wallis the shop, unless they have opened a children's clothing section.
Not so sure about Topaz, it reminds me of an old Hitchcock film where I spent most of the time trying to figure out which of the female characters was Topaz.
There's always Amber or Opal or Ruby or Saphia (Italian woman I knew) or dare I suggest, Jade. Or is it still too recent?

frazzledoldbag34 · 31/07/2008 16:06

I quite like Jade, but not sure if could use it as in my head it sounds like 'Jiyde' said with a really horrible accent. Must be the Jade Goody influence I guess.
But shame, apart from that I think it would be pretty.
DH would have a fit though!
His latest suggestion is Morag! Makes me think of a cow with long curly eyelashes (sorry if your name is morag)

OMG - did I actually marry that man?

Twelvelegs · 31/07/2008 16:09

Topaz is a cheap stone, sorry.
Wallis as in simpson is nice but better for a boy..... How about Posie? That would have been my choice if I weren't having a boy. Hope....is another.

Twelvelegs · 31/07/2008 16:10

I love Maggie too.

CuckooClockWiseCrack · 31/07/2008 16:11

What about Lois? It seems a little bit your taste, but nicer imo!

frazzledoldbag34 · 31/07/2008 16:16

OH dear I know a Lois (not keen).
and several Maggie's (again not keen)..
Posie is too like Rosie and my family is full of Rosie's so again - not keen.
BUT

Keep trying......

frazzledoldbag34 · 31/07/2008 16:20

AND I have a friend with a little girl called Hope.
This is the problem, I have so many neices, nephews and friends with small kids and don't want to 'copy' anyone. So there are actually hardly any nice names left!

[folds arms, stamps feet and huffs about dramatically]

OP posts:
Twelvelegs · 31/07/2008 16:26

Cut all ties with friends and family.... this is your only option!! Or have a boy, they are lovely!! Although I planned for my girl and this one was not so planned... I have two boys, then a girl and soon another boy!!

Twelvelegs · 31/07/2008 16:28

Winnie,Hattie, Hetty, Bliss, Bunty, Clementine (tiny for short), Bloom, Lula....

frazzledoldbag34 · 31/07/2008 16:40

Gosh, you have been busy! Good luck with the next bab.

Ok,
so I know a Lula (yes, really) and a Winnie. Clemetine I'm not keen on. Bliss (????) um not sure what to say about that one Bloom - ditto. The others sound a bit like my DD1's name and would be confusing I think.

But seriously, practically every name I've ever liked has already been used by someone in the family or close friend. And you can't 'copy' people - or can you? I would have thought it wasn't really the done thing?????

Or as you suggest I could just tell them all to Bugger Orf and do what I like!
(appealing option at times)
Right, must go am waffling now....

OP posts:
rowingboat · 31/07/2008 16:43

Calypso, Cornelia (Nell, Nella, Neely, Connie), Dora/Dorrie, did like Dorcas, but it makes me think of 'Dork', Winifred (Winnie, Fred/die), Dolores (Lola, Dolly), Dorothea (Dotties, Dolly), Florence/Florian (Flossie, Lori).
Have a look at talk baby names, it's fab.

frazzledoldbag34 · 31/07/2008 16:53

Will do.
You've again managed to name some of my family / kids middle names/ friends kids!
Do I know you???????????

Brain is frazzled - off to the supermarket.
Deep joy.

OP posts:
rowingboat · 31/07/2008 17:10

Who me? [looks around]
The names in brackets are diminutives of the longer names, but you knew that right?
Supermarkets between 4pm and 7pm very deep joy! [runs away screaming]

Loriycs · 31/07/2008 18:59

interesting to see Lori as a dirivitive of Florence, I'm a Lori incidentally. Bu the way i like Posie, reminds of the programme ballet shoes as a child. I'm surprised it hasnt made a comback with mothers of our generation.

CuckooClockWiseCrack · 31/07/2008 19:57

Ellen is Nelle backwards. I like that.

frazzledoldbag34 · 31/07/2008 20:03

Wasn't it Posy in ballet shoes. With Pauline and Petrova? Loved that book as a child.
