Full name for Rory?

achino · Yesterday 07:25

I have always loved the name Rory for a girl but it is traditionally a nickname. Aurora is my first choice for a full name, but my husband doesn’t like it, but I think he could be convinced. And the name Lorelei is too Gilmore girls coded in my opinion. Any other full name suggestions for the nickname Rory?

You could use Rosemary or Victoria (Tori/Rory).

I opened the thread out of curiosity because I had always understood Rory to be the full name so wondered what it could be short for.

I assumed you were going to have a little boy. I've never heard of Rory for a girl.

Having said that, Aurora, Lorelei, Leonora, Theodora and Victoria would all work.

I would never choose a name leading by your preferred nickname. In my experience you may have a preference but it’s not yours to define.

it’s hard to predict what will stick at school, and what she’ll actually prefer. My own daughter had strong views from the age of 3 on what she did and didn’t want to be called and we’ve barely used the nn we expected to.
Whether she comes back to it as she gets older will be for her to decide.

If you like Rory call her that.
I’m not a fan of contrived nicknames.

Pineapplewaves · Yesterday 08:22

Why not just call her Rory if that’s what she’s going to be called anyway?

Silverbirchleaf · Yesterday 08:27

Came across a young female Rory recently. Until I met her, presumed she was a boy, and didn’t know the female tv lead with that name. Must admit, I did feel sorry that she was going to get mistaken her whole life.

Suggestions -
Coraline
Rowena
Veronica
Gloria
Caroline
Dorothy

Ikeameatballs · Yesterday 08:30

Aside from Aurora all of the other suggestions sound contrived and would not necessarily lead to the nn Rory, you might want to call eg Theodora, Rory but doesn’t mean that’s what will happen!

if you love Rory for a girl just go with that.

Thisusernameisalwaysavailable · Yesterday 08:34

Just use Rory, no need for a "full" name.

Bloau · Yesterday 08:36

I'd just use Rory. Given its recent popularity with little boys, I think she will have a lifetime of people assuming she's male though e.g. when she sends an email. I was at a party recently where the staff were shouting out names for lunches and they were confused by a little female Rory as they were obviously scanning the room for a boy.

Purplecatshopaholic · Yesterday 08:38

I don’t get this at all. If you like Rory, call her that!

ChocoChocoLatte · Yesterday 08:39

Rosalyn

Nicknames are supposed to evolve i honestly don't understand this NN thing, if you like Rory call her Rory, it is a name in it's own right, it is a male name tbf is that why you are looking for girls names to shorten? Be brave call her what you like.

This just isn't true anymore.

Schools will put preferred names on the register, correspondence from school will have preferred name- only official things such as exams need the real name.

They can register her as Sarah, but if they tell everyone her name is Rory that is what she will be known as

Prince Henry is always called Harry- that didn't evolve it was always the plan.

I like the proper name and nn, it gives the child so many more easy options.

I feel for the Teddy's that can never change to Edward.

LittleSF · Yesterday 08:48

Just to be a Gilmore Girls pedant, Rory became Rory because she couldn’t say Lorelei as a young child and mispronounced it as Rory and it became what they called her, rather than it being an abbreviation.

i agree with previous posters though, it’s a lovely name for either a boy or a girl, i think its become a name for either at this stage.

Raiderofthelostbattenburg · Yesterday 08:50

Unless you love the long name, I personally would be wary of choosing it. I think you could definitely just call her Rory, though, if you love the name.

Yes this, i think you have to love the name you give your child so calling her Aurora if you don't love it just so you can can shorten it seems off to me.

Tryagain26 · Yesterday 08:59

I think Rory is a better name for a boy. When people say it written down most will assume she is a boy.

You could name her Victoria, Aurora, Cora or Nora and call her Rory but when she is older she or her friend might decide not to use the same diminutive you use.

Overthebow · Yesterday 09:03

Why is Lorelei too Gilmore girls but Rory isn’t? It’s what I think of when I hear the name Rory. If you like it though just call her that, no need for a longer name.

Rory for a girl will cause her loads of problems

Rory for a girl will cause her loads of problems

Why? Lots of names can be used by both girls and boys, I wouldn't turn a hair at a girl named Rory. My own name is far more common for a boy than for a girl and it has caused me no problems at all Confused

But the child may change it.

I immediately thought male when saw thread title. The only female Rory I have heard of is from Gilmore Girls

Newname26 · Yesterday 09:16

My first answer was Roderick, or just Rory , but your looking for a girl?

Tbh I'd assume Rory was a boy.

BerryTwister · Yesterday 09:46

Surely it’s a boys name. Also, is Roary the Racing Car still popular with kids? Mine loved it but they’re grown up now.
