Full name for Rory?

I have always loved the name Rory for a girl but it is traditionally a nickname. Aurora is my first choice for a full name, but my husband doesn’t like it, but I think he could be convinced. And the name Lorelei is too Gilmore girls coded in my opinion. Any other full name suggestions for the nickname Rory?

It means ‘red king’ though. It’s not a name traditionally given to girls in Ireland. Using a boy name on a girl doesn’t make it a girl name.

OP, I think Aurora is your only option if you want Rory as a diminutive that makes sense.

Is there a girl’s name that means Red Queen?

It means red haired king.

It therefore sounds all wrong for a girl.

By that logic it also sounds all wrong for a boy without red hair?

There's still the actual meaning of the name.

The RI part means 'king'.

So what? Emmett means 'little Emma'.... yet that's "allowed" as a boys name?

Rory isn't even the original form

It's a name. Language evolves.. names evolve.

I really like Rory for a girl and am in the “you should just call her that” camp.

I am a bit surprised all the people saying it’s just a boys name - the fashion at the moment is for unisex names so it’s not that unusual, and I know two females called Rory. One is around 18 (to be fair after the GG character) and the other is in junior school with my youngest child.

My friend has a boy called Angel and gets the odd “poor boy” comment but I think it’s lovely

I think Aurora / Lorelei / Rory for a girl are all ridiculous to be honest.

Aurora is a princess name (sleeping beauty, I think?) and just nauseating in real life.

Lorelei is a character on a US sitcom, and it’s not even a good name.

Rory is a well established name in Scotland for males, I’ve met Rory’s of every age.

I would rethink it. There are plenty of good girls names out there.

Lorelei was a female first name in Germany for a looong time. Lorelei rock on the river Rhine. Tragic myth stories about the beautiful Lorelei bewiching men and causing their deaths on the Rine. Not not use the name if you ever plan to live in a German speaking country. Just google.

@PancakeCloud , norms around names change but the trends tend to fall out of fashion quickly, and the once trendy names seem downmarket.
I don't consider myself 'very traditional' just aware that some names date badly.
Rory seems 'named after a tv character'.

@tartyflette , I know several Samanthas, Saminas and Cheryls. 1960s names.
All the Samanthas are Samantha Jane and the Cheryls Cheryl Anne.Smile

Not that I can find, but as a rough guess (I don’t speak Irish) it would be something like Ruadrion.
