Rory for a boy

I know it’s typically a boy name, especially in other countries besides the US. But everyone I talk to when I say I want to name my son Rory, they say they have never met a boy Rory and reference Gilmore Girls. 😭 this name just feels so right and I never thought of it as a girl name, regardless of Gilmore Girls. Others opinions obviously won’t stop me from using the name, I’m just trying to avoid names that he might get bullied with when he grows older.

What are your thoughts?

The only female Rory I know is Gilmore girls, and it's a nickname. It's very much a normal boys name.

Potatoespotaarrrrtos · 08/10/2026 12:13

It’s a fab name and I have never known a girl called Rory. I do know a couple of boys though and suits them so well!

TattieSconeEggAndBacon · 08/10/2026 12:14

I only know boys called Rory.

SeaGlassDreamer · 08/10/2026 12:14

It’s in the top 20 for boys names last year. It doesn’t even appear in the top 1000 for girls so no danger of it being thought of as a girls name in the UK. It doesn’t sound in the slightest like a girls name.

KidsDoBetter · 08/10/2026 12:14

Eh??? It’s 99% of the time a boys name.

BarbaraUsher · 08/10/2026 12:35

It’s a boys name! Rory’s real name was Lorelei in Gilmore Girls. Heaven knows how they came up with that link!
Rory is great for a boy, it won’t date.

Alisonsy · 08/10/2026 12:37

I know a girl Rory, short for Aurora.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 08/10/2026 12:49

It makes me think of Rory (male) from Doctor Who, who was an absolute badass, so I'd say go for it.

Never seen it used for a girl before

StayAliveJessicaHyde · 08/10/2026 12:50

Rory is a boy's name. In the Gilmore Girls Rory was short for Lorelai as she was named after her mum.

TruffleSlinky · 08/10/2026 12:51

I know a girl Rory but it's a nickname. Rory on its own is definitely a boy's name.

AgentPidge · 08/10/2026 12:54

I was with a friend today who mentioned a Rory (male), and I thought what a lovely name
I could see Rory being a nn for Aurora, but not as an actual girl's name.

Needmorelego · 08/10/2026 12:55

Yes as others have said Rory is a boys name.
I always felt on the Gilmore Girls it was a terrible name for a girl. I know it was supposedly short for Lorelei but I don't quite get how they got Rory out of it either 😂
Unless someone was an obsessive Gilmore Girls fan I doubt there's many girl Rory's out there.

iloveanearlynight · 08/10/2026 13:29

I can't bear it. It just hear ROAR-y.

Freshrain · 08/10/2026 13:44

I do think of Rory the Tiger, (but perhaps not everyone went to Haven on Holiday ?)

But it is 100% a boy's name.

The newest baby I know is called Rory. He is only a few days old.

spiderlight · 08/10/2026 13:57

It's almost exclusively a boys' name, in my experience, and I really like it.

VeryQuaintIrene · 08/10/2026 14:00

As long as your surname isn't Lyons.

modgepodge · 08/10/2026 14:01

I actually do know a girl Rory in the uk, mum is a big Gilmore girls fan. However it’s so unusual for a girl here that when registering the birth the registrar assumed she was a boy and the birth certificate was almost printed wrong!

I quite like it for a girl but would probably have used Aurora, nicknamed Rory.

It’s much, much more common for boys in the UK. There are also Scottish and Irish spellings which I wont attempt, which would further distance it from GG if that concerns you.

PingPong91 · 08/10/2026 14:48

It's a lovely name for boys and girls, and I think in general most people would still consider it primarily a boys' name. Certainly here in Scotland, where it has traditionally been popular, it's much more a boys' name than a girls' name. Here it is often spelled Ruairidh.

ShyMaryEllen · 08/10/2026 14:50

I really like it, and would have had it on the list when my son was born if it didn't clash with our surname.

FookFookFook · 08/10/2026 14:51

Far. more likely to be a boys name and its lovely!

oviraptor21 · 08/10/2026 14:53

Love Rory and never heard it as a girl's name.

petermaddog · 08/10/2026 15:09

rory calhoun/gallagher/culkin

as said name what ever you want

RaraRachael · 08/10/2026 15:34

I've only heard it as a boy's name. It was our first dog's name so I've always had a soft spot for it.

HugoThatway · 08/10/2026 16:32

Rory McIlroy, Rory Stewart, Rory Bremner, Rory McGrath, Rory Kinnear...

BeDandyDenimSloth · 08/10/2026 16:37
