Rory for a boy

shido321 · 08/10/2026 12:10

I know it’s typically a boy name, especially in other countries besides the US. But everyone I talk to when I say I want to name my son Rory, they say they have never met a boy Rory and reference Gilmore Girls. 😭 this name just feels so right and I never thought of it as a girl name, regardless of Gilmore Girls. Others opinions obviously won’t stop me from using the name, I’m just trying to avoid names that he might get bullied with when he grows older.

What are your thoughts?

It's an Irish name that means 'red king' so as far as I'm concerned it's a boys' name.

I absolutely love it I might even have used it

BeanNaGealai · 08/10/2026 16:59

Use the Irish spelling of Ruaidhrí or Ruairí and there will be no confusion...

StonwEd · 08/10/2026 17:03

I have a Rory who is 23 now and I STILL think back to naming him and adore our choice. It's a gorgeous boys name! I've only heard it as a nick name for Aurora for a girl which is lovely.

Spidey66 · 08/10/2026 17:26

????

Rory is a boys name. My cousin has recently named his son Rory. I’ve never known it as a girls name.

ETA I’ve seen the post above suggesting it’s a nn for Aurora, fair enough. But Charlie is a nn for Charlotte but is still a standalone boys name!

I like it for what it’s worth.

Nottodaythen · 08/10/2026 17:29

Where are you OP?
Are you in the US yourself?

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 08/10/2026 17:31

I’ve always thought of it as a boys name other than Rory in Gilmore girls but it wasn’t her full name and a girl who went by it but whose full name was aurora.
In my view it’s a very normal boys name.

Betterbeingdead · 08/10/2026 17:51

It's a lovely name I went to school with a Rory( boy) .also knew a Roy you don't hear that much now

Dabralor · 08/10/2026 18:07

I have never met a Rory who wasn’t just a thoroughly good bloke. It’s one of my favourite names and definitely for boys.

mrsdolittle · 08/10/2026 18:34

My DS is a Rory (now 23) and I just love his name. He was so nearly going to be an Archie but when he was born he looked like a Rory - so that was that! Still think it’s a cracking name - never regretted choosing it 😊 DH wanted to use the Gaelic spelling (DH is Scottish) but I vetoed that. We live in England and no one would be able to spell it (including me 😂)
Have only ever heard of one female Rory - but actually rather like it for a girl

I fail to believe anyone has never heard of a boy called Rory. Ignore them, they're being ridiculous.

Berlinlover · 08/10/2026 19:02

The only female Rory I’ve heard of is Robert F Kennedy’s daughter. It’s definitely a boy’s name though.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/10/2026 19:04

DS is 18. He was at school with several male Rorys. Two in his form. A couple more in his year. Quite a few more in the rest of the school.

eta - they were all male

The only female Rory I now of is Rory Gilmore.

BleakAF · 08/10/2026 19:04

I worry that he won't be able to pronounce his 'r's properly

Mangoandbroccoli · 08/10/2026 19:10

Definitely a boys name and a gorgeous one at that!

They’re obviously not a golf enthusiast 😁

Out of curiosity I googled to see if that was her actual name.
Yes she is a Rory.
She was apparently named after the "Irish King" so technically she's got a boys name.

Edictfromno10 · 08/10/2026 19:58

Another vote for boys name, love it and it was high on our list (for a boy!).

Daffodilsinthespring · 08/10/2026 20:02

It’s a boy’s name.

roshi42 · 08/10/2026 20:07

I think of it as a boy’s name first but I think the recent popularity of Aurora has led to more girls with the nickname Rory

TheRealSmurfette · 08/10/2026 20:10

I know of 2 male ones only.
One spelled Rory.
One spelled Ruairí.
Both of Irish descent…gorgeous, sweet and kind men.
I prefer the second spelling.

Like Johnathan Woss?

They’re pronounced differently though…or they should be at least.

ToadRage · 08/10/2026 20:40

I have never known a girl called Rory. Not watched Gilmore Girls but there was a girl in Lucifer, it was short for Aurora. To my mind it's very much a boys name.

Firebird83 · 08/10/2026 20:40

I do know a 4 year old girl Rory. I definitely see it as more of a boys name though.
