Rory for a boy

shido321 · 08/10/2026 12:10

I know it’s typically a boy name, especially in other countries besides the US. But everyone I talk to when I say I want to name my son Rory, they say they have never met a boy Rory and reference Gilmore Girls. 😭 this name just feels so right and I never thought of it as a girl name, regardless of Gilmore Girls. Others opinions obviously won’t stop me from using the name, I’m just trying to avoid names that he might get bullied with when he grows older.

What are your thoughts?

I love the name Rory for a boy!

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/10/2026 20:59

It’s a (very lovely) boys name

It's an Irish name that means 'red king' so as far as I'm concerned it's a boys' name.

I absolutely love it I might even have used it

Me too (Ruairí!)

Love it.

PeatandDieselfan · 08/10/2026 21:46

Definitely a boys' name. But sounds crap if you don't say R properly, and the pronunciation is a long way from the (correct) pronunciation of Ruaraidh, which is a much stronger, far better name (if you say it right). Roo ah ree. So much cooler than War Wee.

I know a male 'Rory' and the only other reference I know is 'Roary The Racing Car' but I think that's quite some time ago.

Depends on whether you are going with the Irish or Scottish pronunciation. The correct Irish pronunciation is different to the Scottish one but is lovely.

HardFuckingBird · 08/10/2026 22:56

I went to uni with a female Rory (definitely her full name). She is utterly lovely. It's usually a boy's name though. Use the Irish spelling if you want to distance your child from the handful of high profile/celebrity female Rorys (Rories?!).

It’s Roo-ah-ree in Irish too (Rua rí) though many people tend to skip the middle syllable. There’s often at least a bit of it there though, particularly if the speaker is good at Irish.

It's often a shortening for Roderic. Have never heard it for a girl.

patooties · 09/10/2026 00:23

Rory is a boys name,
rora (roar-a) is v short for aurora!

user1492757084 · 09/10/2026 01:01

I only know one girl, Aurora, called Rory.
All others are male.

Flatandhappy · 09/10/2026 02:16

It’s a boy name, Gilmore Girls is the only time I have ever seen it used for a girl.

Ruaraidh is the Gaelic version of Roderick. Like Hamish/Seamus is the Gaelic version of James, Ian/Sean is the Gaelic version of John, etc.
Rory (War Wee) is Ruaraidh re-Anglisized for people who struggle to say Roo Ah Ree.

Yes, I know that but we don’t do the R with quite the same emphasis as the Scots do, which is where the main difference lies in pronunciation.

Edited

I’ve never heard it said War Wee.
Is that an accent thing or a can’t pronounce r’s thing?

I think Ruaraidh/Roderick is a bit different to the other examples you’ve given as Roderick was used to translate Ruaraidh, rather than coming from the same root name like the other examples.

There a quite a few people who struggle with the letter R.

They would say Wo wy

Cheeseandquackers21 · 09/10/2026 16:55

Also the children in his class won't generally have heard of or watch Gilmore girls so I don't think there'd be issue of bullying.

Calliopespa · 11/10/2026 16:04

Boy name

HelloGoodbye6 · Yesterday 12:59

Definitely a boy's name but be aware it is getting very popular, if that bothers you.

The last 3 boys born among our friends and family are Rory!
