Surname is a noun - this is much harder than I thought!!

During the course of our baby name conversations, I've realised just how bloody difficult it is to pair our surname with any of the names I've been adding to my list.

Our surname is a Lamb. Difficult enough being a noun, and having that pastoral connection, but so many of my previously chosen names just don't work.

Serena Lamb - "serene lamb" sounds like a description of a really chilled out farm animal

Lila - too many 'L' sounds

Elinor "Elin" - same

Cillian - saaaaame why do so many of my fave names have Ls in them?!

Christian - lamb of God... christian... too on the nose

Joshua - SAME because Joshua literally means Jesus

Roisin Lamb - sounds too much like roast lamb and I can't unhear it!!

Caitriona - would inevitably be shortened to Cat Lamb (also C.Lamb = clam, but I may be overthinking at this point)

Ophelia Lamb - sounds like you're feeling up a lamb

Freya Lamb - and now you're frying the lamb. (F.Lamb also looks a bit like Flambé 😂)

Francesca (girl) or Fran (boy) - Fran Lamb just sounds dreadful.

I've jokingly suggested we all switch to my maiden name instead because his name is making this unnecessarily hard!

A few of my faves that do work have been used by friends, family members, and ex-boyfriends (I mean, how very dare they) so I can't really use them now.

Any advice from those of you who also have awkward surnames?

It's getting to the point where I might have to go with something really plain and traditional, but I don't want to use a name I don't love just to play it safe. Husband has very few suggestions of his own which doesn't help!

Several of the examples you’ve given sound absolutely fine, just normal names. I would try not to overthink it. If I thought about my own children’s names in great detail I could pick holes in them.

Zinnia Lamb, Delphine Lamb, Camille Lamb, Jasmine Lamb, Emma Lamb.

Charles Lamb, Nathaniel Lamb, Jonathan Lamb?

I really think you might be over thinking this!

Joshua would work perfectly well and the vast majority of people wouldn’t know or think about the meaning day to day.

I see your point with C names and F names and presumably S names as well.

Mary, is I agree, probably best avoided.

But still leaves most of the alphabet and thousands of names!

I think you are starting from the wrong end - start within wide open list of everything you like.

We also have a tricky surname, we just started a list of all the names we liked and removed the ones that didn’t work.

Lamb is an epic surname.

Everyone loves lambs.

Call your baby whatever you want.

I think you’re worrying a bit too much. I wouldn’t even think twice about Joshua, Christian or Maria being christian/religious.

Hugo, Arthur, Jude, Oscar/Oliver, Eddie/Edward
Margot, Harriet/Beatrice/Beatrix, Elodie, Imogen, Edie

David Lamb. Daisy Lamb, Isabel Lamb or Jessica? Plenty goes with Lamb.

I rather like Elinor Lamb!
Plus lots of the more popular girls names seem to work — Olivia, Helena, Sophia, Juliet, or for boys Edward, George, Oscar, Christopher?

C. Lamb is fine. I think I'd choose a longer first name with more syllables. Something like Elizabeth, Henrietta, Josephine, William, Sebastian, or Christopher.

Sebastian Lamb would be Slam. That's actually quite cool.

My dgm's maiden name was Lamb..

She went by her middle me Vera. Her db was Victor.

I think you are overthinking and seeing difficulties everywhere.i don't think there is any issue with the first name including Ls.

I had no idea Joshua meant Jesus.
Christian is a lovely, timeless name that I don't associate with religion.
I also wouldn't make the connection of your surname being associated with Christianity either.
Roisin doesn't sound like roast.

My kids initials are CAR and I couldn't give a kipper. The only people who know his middle name are family and anyone who cares to read any forms I fill out about him.

Realistically, how often are you referred to by your full name in life?

This is a good one for a boy.

I wouldn't think any of your suggestions "dont go" except maybe Lila Lamb being too L-y. The others are fine and you are unduly concerned about connotations. It's not like you are calling your child Leg'o Lamb.

I was at school with Lambs and the 3 girls were Felicity, Emily and Penelope (Penny). All were very popular and no issues with their name that I can remember.

Seriously, I'm glad so many people have said I'm overthinking it. I am a chronic overthinker, so this tracks.

Also, I'm pleasantly surprised that other people actually quite like our surname - I can't say I was thrilled with it when we got married, but it's always been important to me to share the same name as my husband and children so it was never an option to go with anything else really.
