Surname is a noun - this is much harder than I thought!!

During the course of our baby name conversations, I've realised just how bloody difficult it is to pair our surname with any of the names I've been adding to my list.

Our surname is a Lamb. Difficult enough being a noun, and having that pastoral connection, but so many of my previously chosen names just don't work.

Serena Lamb - "serene lamb" sounds like a description of a really chilled out farm animal

Lila - too many 'L' sounds

Elinor "Elin" - same

Cillian - saaaaame why do so many of my fave names have Ls in them?!

Christian - lamb of God... christian... too on the nose

Joshua - SAME because Joshua literally means Jesus

See also: Maria (also brings to mind "Mary had a little lamb")

Roisin Lamb - sounds too much like roast lamb and I can't unhear it!!

Caitriona - would inevitably be shortened to Cat Lamb (also C.Lamb = clam, but I may be overthinking at this point)

Ophelia Lamb - sounds like you're feeling up a lamb

Freya Lamb - and now you're frying the lamb. (F.Lamb also looks a bit like Flambé 😂)

Francesca (girl) or Fran (boy) - Fran Lamb just sounds dreadful.

I've jokingly suggested we all switch to my maiden name instead because his name is making this unnecessarily hard!

A few of my faves that do work have been used by friends, family members, and ex-boyfriends (I mean, how very dare they) so I can't really use them now.

Any advice from those of you who also have awkward surnames?

It's getting to the point where I might have to go with something really plain and traditional, but I don't want to use a name I don't love just to play it safe. Husband has very few suggestions of his own which doesn't help!

Amandaland 😂

Seriously, I'm glad so many people have said I'm overthinking it. I am a chronic overthinker, so this tracks.

Also, I'm pleasantly surprised that other people actually quite like our surname - I can't say I was thrilled with it when we got married, but it's always been important to me to share the same name as my husband and children so it was never an option to go with anything else really.

Could he have not taken your name and avoided all the angstSmile

Bit of a faff at this point but I should have pushed for it 😂if only I'd thought ahead!!

Lins77 · 16/09/2026 13:37

Lamb is a great surname to have!

I agree with whoever said that a more-syllabled first name might work better - that said, half my family have one syllable first names and surnames....

Catherine Lamb
Elizabeth Lamb
Caroline Lamb (didn't she have an affair with Lord Byron?)
Christina Lamb

Yes I do like traditional names 😄

I used to know a lovely old lady called Dorothy Lamb.

Chilly80 · 16/09/2026 14:01

As a fan of alliteration I like lots of Ls

ShapeofanLonmyforehead · 16/09/2026 14:03

You’re massively over thinking it. Except Ophelia, that could lead to some teasing.

just pick a name and go with it. It’s the only way.

AnotherFuckingUsername · 16/09/2026 14:10

Avoid Iona!!! (I have a noun surname and this error was narrowly avoided). Cameron/Campell/Struan for boys and Kathryn/Ishbel work for girls.

Sharon Lamb

I knew a Daniel Lamb. We never thought anything of it when we were kids, or now as an adult!

Many surnames can be problematic with the wrong first name like Jenna/Jenny Taylor, Ali Barber, etc. I also know an Ella Salmon, shit you not! Pick a name that you like and your child will like :)

Whoa Black Betty, Daniel Lamb!

There are lots of names that would work; don't overthink it too much - especially don't go into things like Latin name meanings or anything, that's really just a detail that they or you might find cute rather than anything anyone else will pick up on.

Not RTFT but there are only two names you can have, @floopyboop . Sean or Henrietta.

paddleboardingmum · 16/09/2026 19:48

William
Alexandra

PistachioTiramisu · 16/09/2026 19:51

Caroline Lamb - shades of Keats?
Leonara
Sarah

Westfacing · 16/09/2026 19:57

I've just watched the much awaited latest 'Slow Horses' so I'm all for Jackson Lamb!

Westfacing · 16/09/2026 20:06

I'd never have thought the surname Lamb could be so problematic - but having read your list I can see what you mean!

I'm laughing at Fran Lamb and Flambe

Sunbringer · 16/09/2026 20:13

Nobody is looking at Joshua and thinking Jesus or Serena and thinking calm lamb. Nor Maria. You’re over thinking it. Roisin is row-sheen? Not roast…

BarbaraUsher · 16/09/2026 20:16

If you won’t use your own original surname then how double barrelling it with Lamb?

Yesitsweird · 16/09/2026 20:23

Nicholas Lamb
Henry Lamb
Thomas Lamb
Isaac Lamb
Jacob Lamb

Martha Lamb
Ivy Lamb
Naomi Lamb
Charlotte Lamb
Katie Lamb

I would. Serena Lamb sounds like 'serener lamb'

Nick Lamb 😆. Isaac Lamb Smile

seahorsessky · 16/09/2026 21:26

It's a nice name, and there's quite a few famous Lambs too. And I know a Seren Lamb, only saying as that's similar to Serena.
Not Sean (the sheep). But pretty much every name in my kids' classes would be fine, except Mary or Beau (as in it makes you think Boo Peep).

User6761 · 16/09/2026 21:28

Joshua Lamb, Cillian Lamb, Roisin Lamb and Maria Lamb are absolutely fine.

Agree with avoiding rhyme (Fran Lamb). And Christian Lamb isn't great (but Christopher would be fine). But otherwise I'd say most names go with it fine. A random selection of different style names that all work:

Alexander
Matthew
Oliver
Hector
Euan
Magnus
Ralph
Freddie

Astrid
Harriet
Annie
Greta
Iris
Juniper
Chloe
Ava

Honestly OP don't worry about the few names you can't use, there are loads that you can. Just not Iona Lamb 😂

HugoThatway · 16/09/2026 21:36

Cameron, Samuel, Pamela, Tamsin...

BotterMon · 16/09/2026 21:36

Araminta Lamb - sorry couldn't resist.

Had a Lamb family at school. Sally, Anna and Sarah - all fine.

AmazonAntiqueStore · 16/09/2026 21:37

I’d probably avoid Araminta or Rosemary…

I really like Roisin and don’t think it sounds too much (or at all) like Roast.

Also like Sebastian.
