Surname is a noun - this is much harder than I thought!!

During the course of our baby name conversations, I've realised just how bloody difficult it is to pair our surname with any of the names I've been adding to my list.

Our surname is a Lamb. Difficult enough being a noun, and having that pastoral connection, but so many of my previously chosen names just don't work.

Serena Lamb - "serene lamb" sounds like a description of a really chilled out farm animal

Lila - too many 'L' sounds

Elinor "Elin" - same

Cillian - saaaaame why do so many of my fave names have Ls in them?!

Christian - lamb of God... christian... too on the nose

Joshua - SAME because Joshua literally means Jesus

Roisin Lamb - sounds too much like roast lamb and I can't unhear it!!

Caitriona - would inevitably be shortened to Cat Lamb (also C.Lamb = clam, but I may be overthinking at this point)

Ophelia Lamb - sounds like you're feeling up a lamb

Freya Lamb - and now you're frying the lamb. (F.Lamb also looks a bit like Flambé 😂)

Francesca (girl) or Fran (boy) - Fran Lamb just sounds dreadful.

I've jokingly suggested we all switch to my maiden name instead because his name is making this unnecessarily hard!

A few of my faves that do work have been used by friends, family members, and ex-boyfriends (I mean, how very dare they) so I can't really use them now.

Any advice from those of you who also have awkward surnames?

It's getting to the point where I might have to go with something really plain and traditional, but I don't want to use a name I don't love just to play it safe. Husband has very few suggestions of his own which doesn't help!

Plenty of names will be fine with the surname. Quite a few of the ones that have been mentioned might seem fine until someone points out that it sounds like something else.
A friend named her child a name that runs into the surname, and it wasn't obvious when the name was announced.
The name is something like Mark Edward but the child has his father's surname so is Mark Hunt.
(Not the actual name as it would be outing, and I've not mentioned it IRL)

Op I'd be tempted to look back at husbands family tree see if their is any old names you fancy recycling.

Be gentle with yourself, OP. We all lose the plot at some point during pregnancy, and this is your moment. It could have been over something much worse than baby names, so count yourself lucky. “Róisín Lamb sounds too much like Roast Lamb” will now forever be my metric when it comes to deciding just how far on the road to Crazytown a pregnant woman has gone.

(All your names are fine, by the way, except for Lila Lamb, which sounds like a Victorian-era showgirl who’s been caught in flagrante with a minor royal…)

You underestimate children

My first name and last name are both words for animals in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. I get a lot of funny looks when we go on holiday 😆 I’m basically saying something like ‘Hi I’m Rabbit Moose.’

I like Roisin and Caitriona from your list and I don’t think they sound odd with Lamb :)

Because something like Amelia Lamb is ok but Milly Lamb is a tongue-twister.
Because Layla/Lila/Lola Lamb sounds silly.
Because Joel Lamb would be mistaken for Joe Lamb

I agree it’s important to get it right, since fewer women take their husband’s names these days, so it needs to do for a lifetime, potentially.

I think one-syllable names with no L sounds could work well. Jane Lamb. Ruth Lamb. I’m not a massive fan of Jane or Ruth, but just using them to illustrate the point.

Kate Lamb sounds nice, and the full version, Catherine Lamb also sounds good, imo.

I work with children, no one knows what a tuppenny ewe is 😂

I honestly think you’re overthinking! Lots of the links you’ve made with the above names no one would ever make. I see no issue with most of the names you’ve mentioned. I love Cillian btw

Op is right to be concerned and choose her babies name carefully.
There are plenty names that don't sound like she's doing anything to a lamb.

I also think Lamb is a great surname! Maybe avoid anything with too many Ls in it, but most names go beautifully with it.

In a previous marriage, my surname was Park. We didn't actually have any children but when we were doing the 'what would we name our kids' I realised that almost every single name ended up sounding like a destination board on a bus!

It could be any amount and any animal/meat.

I think there are loads of names that work well. But something like Lucy Lamb runs the risk of sounding like a children's book character 😄

If people on MN have had a giggle at a potential daft nickname you can pretty much guarantee that school pals will to the same.

Kate Lamb doesn't really work either (K-ate lamb)

Every 'will a child get teased about this name?' thread has a teacher or TA saying children don't tease about names. They don't within earshot of teachers and parent.

Kate Lamb is OK. Harriet Lamb sounds like Harry ate lamb.

I do agree that kids will slag off other people's names. Children haven't changed if something is obviously funny kids will latch on to it.

Harriet isn't pronounced Harry ate though. It would never occur to me to associate Harriet Lamb with Harry ate Lamb! It doesn't sound anything like it to me. If anything I think Kate Lamb sounds more like Kay ate Lamb!

Depends on accents, I pronounce ate as ett. Harriet lamb sounds exactly like Harry ate lamb to me.
