Torn between Elsie and Elektra for our baby girl

First time parents, Two very different names but these are our top two and I feel so torn. Elsie feels very cutesy and girly, Elektra feels bold. Sounds silly but it feels like a decision that will have a huge bearing on who she becomes. Elsie is a family name but worried it is very popular. Elektra i just worry could be too bold. Also if it was Elektra I envision it with a ‘k’ not a ‘c’ but is that also too bold?

Think of her as an adult - which name is easier to wear?

Would you change your name to Elektra?

TooOrangey · 29/08/2026 08:02

Elektra! 😂

Shes not a cartoon character.

DoAWheelie · 29/08/2026 08:03

My first thought was "elektra complex" which doesn't have very nice connotations really.

UnPetitDunPetit · 29/08/2026 08:04

Elektra complex...

Soontobe60 · 29/08/2026 08:04

Elektra is awful. Elsie is ok but not what I’d choose. How about Eliza?

Everytimeitrains · 29/08/2026 08:04

I'm not loving Elektra but it's a million times better than Elsie.

Nannyfannybanny · 29/08/2026 08:05

I couldn't vote, because they are both awful. Elsie was old ladies in my childhood in the 1950s, and Elektra sounds like a type of energy provider.

This.

Keroppi · 29/08/2026 08:05

Elektra is a dog name or a superhero. Sorry.
Are you Greek? Lots of lovely other names

Chaarlene · 29/08/2026 08:05

Elektra is a fab name, but didn't she kill her mother? I dunno. Might not be the vibe your kid would appreciate.

TeenToTwenties · 29/08/2026 08:06

Electra is cool, Electra is hot, cool, hot, a mega star and mega watt.
(Starlight Express).

I'd go with neither, I'd use Elsie as a middle name and have a strong but not way out name first. Zian?

6ate9 · 29/08/2026 08:06

Elektra is a bold girl's name of Greek origin that means "amber" or "shining.

Elektra is the famous mythological daughter of King Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, central to tragic plays by Sophocles and Euripides.

Imaginingdragonsagain · 29/08/2026 08:07

I think Elektra is giving your future DC a very bold name to try to carry off. Elsie is ok. How about Eliza as a PP mentioned.

YourWinter · 29/08/2026 08:08

Good grief, you can’t name a human child Elektra / Electra. It’s ridiculous. Get goldfish if you want to mess about with stupid names. Or stick to naming stuffed toys.

BrightLemonQuail · 29/08/2026 08:08

Elsie was always front runner to be fair, but I got worried about the popularity of the name. It was my great nans name, and I have loved it since I was a child, but just worry its in the top ten for popularity. So have since been becoming more fond of Elektra, but maybe it is just the idea of the name, hadnt actually considered the ‘Electra complex’ that is rather offputting

Elsie isn’t great but Elektra is awful. Electra is better but still a bit forced.

Saskia or Anouk have similar vibes to me

FindingMeno · 29/08/2026 08:09

Well I think Elektra is such a cool name and Elsie is very run of the mill ( but still a lovely name)

Bigboldfont · 29/08/2026 08:09

Elektra sounds like a stripper name.
Elsie is cute.

Emma, Eliza, Ellen, Emmie other suggestions.

YourWinter · 29/08/2026 08:10

Elise is lovely! Much nicer than Elsie too. As is Elsa.

user1492757084 · 29/08/2026 08:10

Isabella Rosselini has a daughter called Elettra-Ingrid.
I would call your girl Elettra.

There will be a known woman with her name. Isabella has a sister called Isotta.

Isotta is a lovely name too.

CheeseWisely · 29/08/2026 08:10

If they are the only two names on earth you’ll consider then for the love of god call her Elsie. It’s not my favourite ‘old lady’ name but it’ll slot in amongst the Mabels and Ediths and Sylvias and Bettys that are on the rise.

Elektra is a stage name, or a superhero name (and even the Superheroes are really just called Peter, Bruce and Clark)

BrightLemonQuail · 29/08/2026 08:10

I loved Eliza but it is the name of close relatives, so cant go with that, I also loved Lydia but the got Vetoed

jackstini · 29/08/2026 08:11

How about Elise?

Anagram of Elsie so still a nod to your Great Nan, but less common and more modern

hididdlyho · 29/08/2026 08:11

How about Eleanor/Elena? You could shorten to Ellie if she suits a cutesy nickname or there's El, Lainey, Laynor which work well into adulthood.

shiningstar2 · 29/08/2026 08:12

Elsie definitely.
Elektra/Electra to me sounds like a robot. Rinds me of AnneDroid on that comedy tv show.
Call your lovely baby Elsie after family, not Elektra/Electra which sounds to me like she's being named after electricity. 🤔
