Baby name Rylee

Should I spell Riley as ‘Riley’, ‘Rylie’ or ‘Rylee’?
I do really like the spelling ‘Rylee’ but I worry that’s too weird. Does the middle name Kate go well with it? I’m thinking Rylee Kate or Rylie Kate :)

Riley is a beautiful, strong Irish name, and is more than acceptable as both a girl’s name and a boy’s name.

No it isn't

Does any one else think the majority of posts on MN ‘baby names’, including this one, are either a piss-take of the chavs or rage-bait to wind up the middle classes?

Kate is a lovely name!

I agree as is Katie
Riley on the other hand…… I could think of lots of other nicer names, especially for a girl

sittingonabeach · 15/08/2026 00:43

@ilovepink1007 why do you want to change your name?

Needmorelego · 15/08/2026 01:32

Why are people so bitchy and horrible if they don't like a name?
The OP didn't ask if you liked it - just the best spelling.

The OP isn’t asking about baby names - see her update.

Isn’t it snotty to tell her to spell it a way she doesn’t want to because you think it’s better?

She literally asked which of several spellings posters liked best.

Chickadee26 · 15/08/2026 05:41

That's a good choice.

SomaTaim · 15/08/2026 06:59

Have read your update.
I’m happier that this is your own choice. However you spell it.

actually ‘Reilly’ is the Irish name and it’s a surname. Comes from the Irish O’Rathaille. It’s in no way a first name in Ireland for either boys or girls.

It’s from Ó Raghallaigh I think.
Ó Rathaille is O’Rahilly.

It’s been used a little as a first name in the last few years (I know a Reilly in school with DD) but it’s definitely not traditional as a first name in Ireland.

BCBird · 15/08/2026 11:27

Don't like it and in particular don't like your preferred spelling either. It makes me think of a surname

Thatcannotberight · 15/08/2026 11:32

It seems to be popular in the US, but they've always used surnames as first names.
DS age 25 did go to school with a boy called Riley. I dislike it for that connection.

I suspect it's become a gender neutral name chosen by young women with a non binary identity.

It's been a unisex name for donkeys years.
Nothing to do with "non binary".

Oh aren't you so mature?
Reporting you.

Minasama · 15/08/2026 21:25

There was a Rylee at my child’s school who was a boy, could it be a problem if she is mistaken for a boy?

bloblob · 15/08/2026 23:43

Riley is fine and a normal name. The baby name section can be a bit odd in that perfectly unremarkable names get a lot of hate and strong words whilst names like Ptolemy, calliope and horatio are called ‘fabulous’. It’s a bit obscure.

I think Ptolemy et al get an equal amount of scorn. It's names like Charlotte/Alexander/James/Alice that are mumsnet approved.

Giving a child a sensible, normal name will never hold them back in life.

I worry that names like Riley/Kylie are a fad based on the Kardashians being inexplicably popular at the moment. Showing my age but the faddy names of the past e.g. Maisie-Maes, Chardonnays and Kais are cursed by their names from day 1.

There's a lot of judgement from other parents who wouldn't want their child playing with a child with a very lower class name to teachers looking at their new class register and making assumptions that a child will be a dick.

Professionally it's very likely that people would assume the pinnacle of achievement for a child with a certain name would be to become an owner of a cleaning company or a receptionist. Children with boring, traditional names can transend occupational classes without judgement or lowered expectation, and that gift of freedom is a huge thing for a child.

Similar names without limiting class associations might be Cassie, Pippa, Sadie, Lottie, Verity.

The funny thing about it is that most TRULY wealthy people are not concerned with what other people will think of their child's name (within reason). Many even give their children very eccentric/bizarre names. They simply choose names that appeal to them in some way. Ultimately, it is people who are trying to appear to have a certain status that are overly worried about how their child's name will be perceived by others.

After all, only a truly wealthy person could 'get away' with calling their child Chardonnay.

I think for a girl Rylee is better
