Should I spell Riley as ‘Riley’, ‘Rylie’ or ‘Rylee’?
I do really like the spelling ‘Rylee’ but I worry that’s too weird. Does the middle name Kate go well with it? I’m thinking Rylee Kate or Rylie Kate :)

Riley, if you choose an unusual spelling you will be forever correcting people, trust me, it gets really old really quickly especially with stupid people who continue spelling your name wrong even when you corrected them 10 seconds ago.

To be very honest I am a young adult and I am wanting to change my name legally, I have been going by the name ‘Riley’ (with that spelling) instead of my legal name for practically all my life. I just wondered what other people would think about a different spelling, or whether it would go with ‘Kate’ as a middle name. I’ve gotten my response and will spell it ‘Riley’. I wanted ‘Kate’ as a middle name. Yes, I did ask for other’s opinions and I apologise for being dishonest about who I am or what my intentions were. However, some of the people who replied to this thread should think very carefully about what they’re saying, their tone and who they’re speaking to. The majority of the people asking questions about baby names are young women expecting babies. They could be overwhelmed, vulnerable, depressed or lonely. Simply disagreeing politely instead of making outright judgements related to class, achievement and character could go a long way for someone who may not be in the best place. I can admit that ‘Rylee’ would not have been a sensible way to spell it, it was just a random thought. FYI - ‘Riley’ is a traditional, gender neutral Irish name.

Me too. Because it suggests that for girls the most important consideration is being ‘pretty’, and we must ensure they all know that from birth. FFS 🙄

It's an Irish surname rather than a traditional Irish name like Tadhg etc. Its use as a given name began in the US I think?

It's pretty popular in the UK now as a boy or girl's name so OP would be fine, Riley easily the most popular spelling so best to avoid misspellings.

Spell it Riley - I think Kate is nice middle name with it.

I think any spelling of the name is fine. I actually don’t mind Rylee. It is easy to pronounce- it is also a name which would require spelling which ever way you pick.

I have only ever met 2 Rileys and they were both girls

Wry-Lee rather than the phonetic Rilee-Kayt. Wry loosely meaning dry wit and Lee meaning shelter. A dry shelter!

Have an unfortunate situation at my school where there is a gender neutral name that a boy and girl share. The boy is one year ahead of the girl. The boy is a character and quickly made a reputation for himself. The girl is super shy and quiet. Whenever the name is said everyone assumes it’s the boy and worse loads of staff just don’t know this girl exists. Her mum told me once how unfortunate it was that she had arrived at the school after the other one. Not only had she got a “boy’s name “ because he was there first, she had a “naughty boy’s name”.

I was actually considering the name of
if DD had been a boy. The conversation with the girl’s mum put me right off!

You don’t get to police threads. And if you’d been honest to start with, you might have got more tempered responses. There’s a huge difference to ‘this is the name I’ve been called all my life’ and ‘this is what I plan to name a baby and I want to give it a weird spelling’.

Baby Names is a place for posters to be more honest than people in rl would be. They can often point out that saddling a child with a particular name could well be cruel/embarrassing/worthy of piss taking.

I do know a teen girl called Riley and it’s a perfectly nice name but please don’t fuck about with the spelling to make it more “uniq” otherwise people will just assume that you’re illiterate.

i just did a cursory google and it seems about a quarter of girl registrations with that name use the spelling Rylee.
