Baby name Rylee

Should I spell Riley as ‘Riley’, ‘Rylie’ or ‘Rylee’?
I do really like the spelling ‘Rylee’ but I worry that’s too weird. Does the middle name Kate go well with it? I’m thinking Rylee Kate or Rylie Kate :)

Riley is fine. Rylee looks that word we aren’t allowed to use.

Sounds like a boys name personally I don't like it for a girl, people seeing her name will think she's a boy and it will cause her a lot of problems growing up. Why not give her a pretty girls name.

Why would having a unisex name cause problems. I have one, never had a problem.

It has never bothered me at all. I don’t give it any thought. Many people have names they have to spell. That is even before you get to my surname!

Riley is a beautiful girl name. I like the name Riley. Good choice in the middle name Kate. Riley spelt Riley is a good choice too. Congrats on the birth of your baby girl.

Giving a child a sensible, normal name will never hold them back in life.

I worry that names like Riley/Kylie are a fad based on the Kardashians being inexplicably popular at the moment. Showing my age but the faddy names of the past e.g. Maisie-Maes, Chardonnays and Kais are cursed by their names from day 1.

There's a lot of judgement from other parents who wouldn't want their child playing with a child with a very lower class name to teachers looking at their new class register and making assumptions that a child will be a dick.

Professionally it's very likely that people would assume the pinnacle of achievement for a child with a certain name would be to become an owner of a cleaning company or a receptionist. Children with boring, traditional names can transend occupational classes without judgement or lowered expectation, and that gift of freedom is a huge thing for a child.

Similar names without limiting class associations might be Cassie, Pippa, Sadie, Lottie, Verity.

Some owners of cleaning companies do very well for themselves, even becoming millionnaires. I agree some names invite negative judgement but you sound somewhat snobish.

Gave my girl a boys name (family surname) Carey. She owned it from day 1. She's nearly 22 now and loves it.

To be very honest I am a young adult and I am wanting to change my name legally, I have been going by the name ‘Riley’ (with that spelling) instead of my legal name for practically all my life. I just wondered what other people would think about a different spelling, or whether it would go with ‘Kate’ as a middle name. I’ve gotten my response and will spell it ‘Riley’. I wanted ‘Kate’ as a middle name. Yes, I did ask for other’s opinions and I apologise for being dishonest about who I am or what my intentions were. However, some of the people who replied to this thread should think very carefully about what they’re saying, their tone and who they’re speaking to. The majority of the people asking questions about baby names are young women expecting babies. They could be overwhelmed, vulnerable, depressed or lonely. Simply disagreeing politely instead of making outright judgements related to class, achievement and character could go a long way for someone who may not be in the best place. I can admit that ‘Rylee’ would not have been a sensible way to spell it, it was just a random thought. FYI - ‘Riley’ is a traditional, gender neutral Irish name.

It’s not traditional as a first name OP.

O’Reilly is a very well-known Irish surname, but Riley as a first name is only in the Irish baby name records for boys since 2002 and girls since 2008. There may have been a few before that because the stats only show a name if it’s used more than twice a year, but it’s a very recent first name in Ireland really, not a traditional one. There have also been a very small number of children called Reilly in the last 10-20 years.

I think the first name Riley probably started life elsewhere (possibly at least partly among the Irish diaspora?) before coming to Ireland. Riley is also a surname of English origin, so the name seems to have more than one root.

People really need to read all the OP’s comments before wading in. It won’t take long, there’s only one update - but it’s a significant one.

If you can’t be arsed, the long and short of it is that OP has done a kind of reverse. She is offended that posters have been commenting negatively on the name because it’s what she calls herself, and is hoping to change it formally by deed poll. There’s a finger waggy scolding for everyone who wasn’t effusively positive because apparently we should all be more careful about giving opinions on baby names on the baby names board.

I would go with the typical "Riley" spelling.
I always use typical spellings: Tamara, Britneigh, Charleigh

Spell it properly (Riley), it's a less used name so doesn't need a youneek spelling too.
