The only Tatum I've ever heard of is Tatum O'Neal, who is a woman. To me it seems very American - it's not a name that's used much on the other side of the pond. I wasn't aware it was also used for men in the States.

Either sex. It's a surname, so in theory could be given to either as a first name - the only one most people have heard of is Tatum O'Neal, who was named after Art Tatum.
