What do you think of Jove for a boy?

Er, Jove as in alternative name for Jupiter, surely! I'd only use it if I were sure that the child was safe to put in charge of lightning bolts down the line! (lightning bolts seem to be ecumenical).
Actually, it looks a bit megalomaniac to be naming the hapless infant after the head Roman god.

I would enjoy meeting a child named Jove. He would be memorable! I’d assume his parents had a funny sense of humor.

I like it! I did think “By Jove” (I’m in my 30s, and not sure what it comes from, but it’s the only faint reference I have). Surely there are worse associations to have??

I think it’s cool, and it seems that it’s another name for Jupiter, whose Greek equivalent is Zeus (if I’m reading Wikipedia correctly). I have met more than one school age Zeus. Why not Jove?

I see I am in the minority but I don’t really understand the strong reaction some are having. Maybe I’m missing a reference?

"By Jove!" was an expression of shock or sincerity that's used by Shakespeare's Henry V, and Sherlock Holmes, amongst many others.

Zeus/Jupiter/Jove isn't the greatest role-model. Let's just say that relatively few of the women/goddesses that bore his children were willing.

I don’t see the issue with “the “by Jove!” expression, and think it sounds fine as a name. I wouldn’t be sure whether to pronounce it Joe-v or Jo-vee if seeing it written, but again not a big deal. I prefer the sound of Jo-vee (like Zooey deschanel’s character of Elf) - could work for a boy as well as a girl.
To be honest I think it’s a bit boring.

Here’s a genuine question. Which names DO posters on MN like? Are there any? 🤔 I’ve only seen majority dramatic negativity and insults on all of the recent baby name posts.

Any name that is popular is popular "because it is lovely" not because it's trendy.

It's another name for Jupiter. It was used in "By Jove" because saying "By God" or similar would have been blasphemy.

No it's not, it's a variant of Jupiter, Roman god who's Zeus's equivalent.

"By Jove, I think she's got it," is the line in "The Rain In Spain Falls Mainly On The Plain" scene in My Fair Lady (as well as By Jove being an old expression)

I don’t agree -
people often offer a long list of the names they love
people often give positive feedback on names suggested

i think there is generally only uniformity with negative feedback for names for the particularly weird ones -
like
surnames for first names
adjectives for names
frakenbite names
names with strange spellings like Eeviee - gives the impression of trying too hard
names that are interpreted / judged as ‘chavy’ e.g Kayden / Jayden / Destiny- Mae

I’m early 30s and all I heard was “by Jove”. I don’t even know where that saying is from but I’ve heard it so many times over the years.

I love an “out there name” but Jove is pretty bad.

@Bitsandbobbles , and middle names must be chosen from Rose, May or Grace for a girl and can only be James for a boy. Because they are "gorgeous" obviously and they are probably "family names".

I have to disagree with you. There are always a few positive comments, but they’re usually outnumbered. Most posters tend to overreact and act like perfectly normal names will be life ruining. There was a recent thread on Axel and Justin that received majority negative feedback. There was a recent thread on Julian that received majority negative feedback. I remember a thread some time ago where posters were acting like Fiona was the absolute worst name they’d ever heard. Just some examples of what I’ve seen. These are quite standard (maybe even slightly beige) names to me. They’re really not weird at all.

Most posters act oblivious, like they’ve never heard of anyone being called some of these very common and well-known names and can’t believe that the OP is considering them. It’s bizarre.

To be fair, Axel is a horrendous choice for obvious reasons.
