What do you think of Jove for a boy?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I'd never heard of it either, and I'm in my late 20s.

How did you come across the name? It’s the context the majority of people will have heard of it.

HugoThatway · 29/07/2026 13:02

It's better than Uranus

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/07/2026 13:05

It reminds me of one of the catchphrases used by the late comedian Ken Dodd.

poundshopkardashians · 29/07/2026 13:09

i would wonder if I was reading it correctly, and it was a different pronunciation (eg ho - vay or something like that!) instead of just literally ‘Jove’

Blueuggboots · 29/07/2026 14:11

By?

Peanutlicious · 29/07/2026 14:14

By jove...

Firebird83 · 29/07/2026 20:01

By Jove, like everyone else has said!

Pistachiocake · 29/07/2026 20:12

yonem · 29/07/2026 10:36

By Jove, I wouldn’t want to be called it. I think people would constantly mistake it for Joe.

I think everyone would just be saying the first two words of your post. Younger people do say it in a mocking way as it is. Don't know anyone who says it in a serious way these days, though with that film coming out, maybe Roman and Greek god names will get more popular.

MyThreeWords · 29/07/2026 20:19

It feels like parents these days are all competing with one another for who can choose the silliest names.

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/07/2026 20:20

I like it. However I’m clearly in the minority on this one!

Lararoft · 29/07/2026 20:21

Golly gosh.. By Jove, what fun!!

Lararoft · 29/07/2026 20:24

Reminds me of RAF pilots in 1940s movies.. old BBC RP speech.. original Enid Blyton books etc. Basically just no.

mathanxiety · 29/07/2026 20:36

It's short for Jehovah.

So no.

hobbledyhoy · 29/07/2026 20:42

By Jove! My slightly posh grandad used to say this all the time.

sorry OP not great.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 29/07/2026 20:44

Aaloyisha · 29/07/2026 10:35

Ridiculous.

This
by Jove

it’s not a name
it’s not even a word

they’ll never be able to choose a personalised name gift in a museum gift shop with that ridiculous name that’s just the tip of the iceberg 🤣

FionnulaTheCooler · 29/07/2026 20:47

Isn't it what Will Ferrell's girlfriend in Elf is named?

SandboxSalsa · 29/07/2026 20:47

Technically it's the ablative of Jupiter, hence 'by Jove'. Gloriously irregular Latin noun...

MirrorVent · 29/07/2026 20:48

I love it

morbidcuriosity · 29/07/2026 20:51

Is that the girls name i the film elf?

RJnomore1 · 29/07/2026 21:05

No.

BCBird · 29/07/2026 21:06

No. I don't like it.

BinfortheWin · 29/07/2026 21:12

I’m a midwife and even I’d struggle to keep my poker face if confronted with this.

If I met ‘Jove’ as an adult, I’d assume it was some stupid posh nickname - ‘oh hi I’m Jove, short for Richard.’

What do you think of Jove for a boy?

WHY do people come up with such ridiculous names on this board? 😖

Why would you give your child such a dreadful name @HaveAThink ???

Seriously, take heed of your username!

HugoThatway · 29/07/2026 21:31

School holidays.

Technically it's the ablative of Jupiter, hence 'by Jove'. Gloriously irregular Latin noun...

And also the vocative! O, Jove!

As far as I know, "Jehovah" is a mediaeval Latinization of YHWH, and was possibly influenced by "Jove."

Awful name for so many reasons, in my opinion.
