Is this name too rare to be used?

I'm due in November with a girl, and I've really been liking the name Estée (pronounced ess-tay) after finding out that I had an ancestor called this. It's very simple and pretty to me. I think my DH is starting to come round to it too. Just wondering if I've gone mad.

I’m familiar through the make up brand but I’m sure people will soon move on from that when your baby is here.

I think I would automatically reply “Lauder” when I heard that name, it’s such a strong association to me and I’ve never heard it in any other context. That will get annoying pretty fast!

It’s a pretty name in itself, but I wouldn’t personally inflict the constant “yes, like the make up brand….” on a child.

It sounds very chavvy to me and wouldn’t sound nice in many regional accents, sounds either like a mispronunciation of Esther or nestea ice tea (Liptons)

Why not give her a name like Estelle and use Estee as a nickname. You might like it but she may hate being so identifiable whilst spending her entire life confirming it is indeed like the make up brand.

Isn’t that like the brand? I think most people will associate it with that.

I would think of make up but you can use it. People won't think make up in the long run around you.

This reminded me of my lovely grandma. She used to pronounce the cosmetics brand 'Ess-tee Law-dee'. 🙂

Yes, my immediate thought is Lauder. But I’m sure people would quickly forget about that as they get familiar with the name.

It's a lovely name but I wouldn't say rare. I know of 4.. all in their 20s, 30s and 40s.

Estée Lauder the brand is named after the founder who was nicknamed Estée but actually called Josephine Esther. I think I probably would mostly think of that association to be honest and assume she was named for the brand. I've worked with kids called Cartier, Versace and many many Diors.

Was the name in your family history a nickname or the name registered in the birth register or Baptism records? Is it possibly a spelling error. I have an relative whose baptism record says Catryn rather than Kathryn or Catherine. My husband's Great Grandfather was a Baruch but immigration wrote it down as Barnet!

Estee is a not uncommon shortening of Esther in the Charedi community although it's more an Tea than a Tay sound. I think it is a pretty name

I would think of Haim, which is a very cool association! Though I think she spells it a bit differently.

It's actually a nice pretty name in my opinion but obviously I just think of Estée Lauder make up skincare brand!

I quite like it. It made me think of the Taylor Swift song that has the name in it.

It's pretty! My first thought seeing it on its own wasn't "... Lauder" either. But then I knew that was named after a person anyway.

I'm absolutely amazed you know 4 people called Estee. Statistically that's incredibly impressive.
