Does Barney Bennett sound fine, or too cartoonish for a baby name?

Please help - C-section is tomorrow and my hormonal brain is having a wobble!

We love the name Barney (potentially Barnaby on birth certificate). The problem is our surname is Bennett. I can’t make my mind up whether it has a nice flow or sounds like a silly cartoon character. His middle name will be Charles (family name). Am I going insane? We have other names on our list but none we love as much as this.

Wow some of these people who have commented are brutal. I bet their kids all have really boring vanilla names. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks - he is your child and I think if you don't pick it you will regret it. It is nice and memorable, I personally love it!

There are quite a few Barneys about. It's perfectly acceptable as a name in its own right.

Sorry it definitely sounds like a cartoon character but also reminds me of my sisters dog Barney.

Barnaby Bennett is great. Definitely flows better than Barney so use that as a full name that he can grow into with Barney as a nickname.

Barney and Barnaby are both fine as first names but I agree with those who think that it sounds too cartoony when combined with Bennett. Cute for a toddler but twee for a grown man.

Really don't like Percy. First thought is Percy Pig. Isn't it also American slang for a penis? I don't know if it's current slang or old fashioned but I wouldn't risk it. (The phrase "Point Percy at the porcelain," came into my head. Goodness knows where I have heard that.)

I like Arthur.

I dont.know why you'd name your child after a big, silly, purple dinosaur. I think all these old people names on little kids and babies is really odd and pretentious. I think some parents think it makes them sound "posh". A lot of them sound like farm animals, too. If you go to any farm, you see pigs, donkeys and cows with the same names as the visiting babies.

The OP presumably posted here for honesty, not an insincere ‘Oh, lovely’. DS was named a name so unusual that the numbers of babies given it in his birth year weren’t given, which I think means there were fewer than three.

Baranaby is just about okay. Like the others. But Percy?! Why name a child a common nickname for a penis? What is your husband thinking of?

No problem with the negative opinions, I expected mixed opinions on the name itself, it’s not for everyone.

I had no idea of the Percy/penis association and will definitely be using that to get it off the list once and for all 😂

I'm not the biggest fan, but do agree that Barnaby is better than Barney with your surname. The one adult Barnaby I know uses Barnes as a nn, Barnes Bennett - does that work?

I think Barnaby is nicer than Barney.
Barney feels like a character because of the awful dinosaur.

Definitely Barnaby rather than Barney although he's likely to end up as Barney.

I actually like Charles/ Charlie as a first name and it's a good option if he wants to change it.

Somehow Barnaby Bennett sounds better than Barney Bennett. Better rhythm. But it will get shortened anyway.

Once you've used Barney for 25 years you won't even think about it, it'll just be his name and he'll be an adult in a world of other adult men, some of whom will be named Rex, Blue, Beau, Milo and Arlo which no-one will batman eyelid over either!

I used to know a Barnaby and nobody called him Barney. To me Barnaby sounds like a proper grown up name. The guy I knew was quite posh.

My vote is for Arthur. Solid, classic name.
