Since I was relatively young, I always loved the name Luke and always imagined my DS would be called Luke. But it just sounded dreadful with my now husband’s surname that I couldn’t do it 😔

For my DD1, my top choices were Erin or Tess but DH wasn’t sold.

And then there were names like Seraphina and Dmitri that I love but wasn’t brave enough!

Iocanepowder · 17/07/2026 08:05

Boys: James, Edward, Sebastian (we didn’t have boys, but husband had vetoed Sebastian in any case).

Girls: Charlotte, Emily, Rebecca, Stephanie, Caroline, Sarah (either vetoed by my husband, not chosen because of close relatives with these names, or just didn’t go with our surname).

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 17/07/2026 10:37

Thora. I wasn't brave enough with DD (although the name we chose has proven utterly perfect for her). I would have been a lot braver with DC2 but he was a boy.

Charlie, because my sister’s best friend had recently had a boy and called him Charlie so chose not to go with it. Violet, because I had a boy.

Why on earth did that mean you couldn't use the name?

lemoncurdcupcake · 17/07/2026 16:28

Oh gosh, so many! We'd always start with a looooong list that was steadily narrowed down as we neared the birth so feel like I considered every name in existence.

Nathan (Nate) and Phoebe were on my radar from when I was a teen but they didn't make the cut as we had close family/family friends with the names and didn't feel right. Have also always loved Gilbert and Felicity but again they didn't ever make it to a shortlist. Gilbert because it's on all the rugby balls and Felicity didn't work in my husband's country.

Eric, Elio, Ginny and Ella were kept in the wings as we wanted to see what baby looked like before making a decision so had two picked out for each gender each time. Alexander/ra was a front runner till three friends in a row bequeathed it to their babies whilst we were waiting for ours. The popularity put me off!

Elizabeth. It is my second daughter's middle name but I wish I'd chosen it as her first but DH didn't like the harsh sound of "Liz"

Jack, Adam, Ivo, Eugene

ImpatientlyWaitingForSummer · 18/07/2026 23:44

I always thought if I had a girl she would be Elara, it was my favourite name. Then the day after I found out my second was going to be a girl I was speaking to someone who mentioned the name Lila and immediately remember that is was my absolute favourite name when I was younger. Sure enough, I now have a one year old Lilah (with an added “h”) 😀

Elspeth ~ no Scottish ancestry and wouldn't look right with our surname

Philippa & Josephine ~ DH wanted a 'truly' girls name, not a female version of a male name

Jonathan ~ we know several and felt it may have caused confusion

Simeon ~ DH wasn't keen, can't remember why!

I’m a Philippa. I love my name- never thought of it that way!

SinuousTendrils · 18/07/2026 23:58

Delphine
Laurel
Meles
Stella
I still love all of them.
