Me and my partner really like the name "Knowledge" for a boy. I'm curious to see what other people think of this name choice.

Knowledge Jamie Smith (our last name is very similar to Smith)

Jamie is the middle name because his father's name is James.

I think it holds a warm and curious energy. What do you guys think?

Well as you can see I am here posting about it so people's opinions do matter to me. I still like the name but I understand why it doesn't land well with people and that's exactly what I was looking to find out by making these posts. I know everybody has their opinions. Most people don't like super unique names and that's fine. I actually have a name that is super unique and it's not a name that's used a lot. Never bothered me personally. And I'm not sure why you think it's not acceptable to do, we have a cousin called miracle and another cousin called Noble. We feel like it fits in with that vibe. It's obviously not the final decision yet otherwise I wouldn't even be posting about it

"Unique" means you're the only one with that name. "Super unique" isn't a thing!

And I'm not sure why you think it's not acceptable to do,

I don't know what you mean by this - sorry. I haven't posted that anything is unacceptable (other than telling people with kids to their faces that the kid's name is a bad choice, as you suggested someone else should do).

Non-traditional names are absolutely fine - one of my DC has a very unusual name!

It's not the popularity of the name that people are commenting on (ie how many people are named it), it's that Knowledge is the dictionary word for "awareness of facts and information", so will be used in everyday language and might be seen as embarrassing for the child if/when they have limited knowledge, and looks a bit like "awareness of facts and information" is something that you, as parents, think is a highly desirable quality in a child.

That's why people are suggesting it's unkind, I think.

Why would I up and change my name to something that I'm trying to name my child's name we can't both have the same name what are you even talking about?? To say it's a cruel name is a bit dramatic.

Everytime he doesn't know something people will take the piss. That is cruel.

Super Unique, now there’s an interesting name choice! Or maybe Virtually Unique 😉

I know!!! The poor child is being set up to be ridiculed throughout his life, especially if his general knowledge is lacking!!!

SoftandQuiet · 14/06/2026 09:47

There'll be a stage when you find yourselves constantly saying "No, Know!" or "Know! No!"

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 14/06/2026 09:52

Go ahead and name him this if you like but prepared for it to be changed. Satchel Allen goes by a middle name Ronan and Zowie Bowie goes by Duncan Jones (Jones was David’s birth surname).

That’s what I was thinking - it’s usually obvious whether someone’s saying ‘no’ or ‘know’ by the context, but with ‘Know’ as a name it’s often going to be hard to tell the difference.

Yes, there'll be many a person who thinks they're the first to say "Knowledge doesn't know - which is ironic!"

Personally, if it were me, that would begin to grate after a few years.

remembranceofthingspast · 14/06/2026 11:49

Who was it in the thread who said 'far too many children will be called ' something in particular this year. I would like to Google what series of whatever that name is from for people to choose it, as I had not heard of it. X Thanks

AlbieJiggered · 14/06/2026 12:14

@JulietteHasAGun , Nameberry is not a reliable source of information.

@TheHateUGive ,Cato is 'cate-o'

@60andcounting , Endeavour was fictional.

@garlictwist , Sophian doesn't seem to be a name. Sufyan is and it doesn't mean wisdom.

@remembranceofthingspast , it was @TheHateUGive , I think. The World Cup is on so footballers' names will be fresh in people's minds.

DramaAndBullshit · 14/06/2026 12:18

I think it doesn’t matter what other names you have ‘Knowledge’ is a ridiculous thing to call a child.

Drivingselfmad · 14/06/2026 12:20

I quite like abstract nouns as names - Hope, Grace etc - so in theory I think it’s fine, and in some cultures it’s very common to use such names - Blessing etc. I taught a Miracle once. Personally I’m not keen on the ‘idge’ sound at the end, but that’s just personal preference.

chirrupybird · 14/06/2026 12:24

Think of the most embarrassing name you can and then add a diminutive. You can't even shorten it to something more reasonable.

Give him the solid James for a first name which can be Jim (Jimmy as a child) and if you must do Knowledge put that in the middle and he can be James K Smith nearly all of the time.

chirrupybird · 14/06/2026 12:27

Sweethearttttttt · 14/06/2026 07:55

Nickname would be Know, which is very similar to Noah

Which would be said No, very confusing for a child shouting No at them every time you call them.

BrickProblems · 14/06/2026 14:14

As I said I don’t hate Knowledge but I think Know as a nickname is unfortunately really silly. Children need the word “no” to mean something (I just called it to mine who suddenly decided to do something stupid).

Sophian is a name. I live in France and it's quite common here.

AlbieJiggered · 14/06/2026 15:04

@garlictwist , probably with Algerian heritage. Sufyan is an Arabic name.

I think using abstract nouns like this for names is ridiculous. What will you do if he turns out to be stupid?

This was my thoughts too. I knew an Innocent in the past, he was far from it 😂

ScaredButUnavoidable · 14/06/2026 17:02

Oh OP, please, please don’t do this.

Noble and Miracle as names I can understand…..

Noble is a positive personality trait, and Miracle is something wonderful that happens…. they both have inspirational meanings behind them etc.

….. but Knowledge is just a totally boring word.

It doesn’t make any sense as a name at all and you’d be opening them up to a whole childhood of being laughed at.

Even if you like the name, put that to one side and truly ask yourself if your feelings matter more than what the outcome of using it could potentially be on your child.

Please don’t do this to your future child.
