Thoughts on the baby name Knowledge with a surname like Smith

Me and my partner really like the name "Knowledge" for a boy. I'm curious to see what other people think of this name choice.

Knowledge Jamie Smith (our last name is very similar to Smith)

Jamie is the middle name because his father's name is James.

I think it holds a warm and curious energy. What do you guys think?

Reddit weren't awfully impressed by your choice either when you asked them OP!

I hear you but I want you to know I am putting a lot of consideration into what I name my child. I'm not picking the first thing that pops into my head, so thank you. Like I said I ran the name by my partner with multiple middle name options and he loves it. Obviously we aren't locked into it as a final name yet but it's on the list. 💕

It’s good that you are putting a lot of consideration into choosing a name, but NO ONE has said anything nice about the name Knowledge, so that should tell you what a bad idea it would be for your child to be saddled with this name.

That reminds me of Noel

No.
Noel has two syllables, Noll has one.

I don’t pronounce Noel with two syllables. The female Noelle, yes, but Noel is just one

Ok. I suppose it depends on where you live.

Tell that to the people who have literally already used it as a baby name.

That would be quite rude, as the child is already here and named. I do hope you don't actually think that's an acceptable thing to do.

It's far better to have the discussion before the decision is final, as is happening here.

I'm assuming you're not in the UK OP? (Due to American spelling used in your posts). Would you be expecting Knowledge to go to college?

I always thought Mumsnet loved very traditional names, and something like Knowledge (or Patience, Love, Humility, Temperance etc) are very old fashioned.

There's no real reason that some noun/virtue names are still used and some aren't.

The Puritans used a lot of “virtue” names, but I don’t think they would have used Knowledge, because it’s something that a human acquires for himself, rather than being given by God. So they might have used Wisdom, but not Knowledge.

I think using abstract nouns like this for names is ridiculous. What will you do if he turns out to be stupid?

What a ridiculous thing to say

Okay the first part of your reply was really weird but the second part was a good idea. Definitely considering Jamie as the first name too.

Why is it weird wouldn't you like knowledge as your name?

Well as you can see I am here posting about it so people's opinions do matter to me. I still like the name but I understand why it doesn't land well with people and that's exactly what I was looking to find out by making these posts. I know everybody has their opinions. Most people don't like super unique names and that's fine. I actually have a name that is super unique and it's not a name that's used a lot. Never bothered me personally. And I'm not sure why you think it's not acceptable to do, we have a cousin called miracle and another cousin called Noble. We feel like it fits in with that vibe. It's obviously not the final decision yet otherwise I wouldn't even be posting about it

Noll rhymes with doll.

But, cool, call him Noel.

I said it reminds me of Noel. I didn't say they are the same name.. and I think I'll stick to my choice, Know. Thanks though..

Telling me to change my name to Knowledge and name him Jamie.. like what do you get out of telling me to change my name? Is that a passive aggressive way of saying that you don't like the name? That's why it was weird.

No im saying i think its a ridiculous and cruel name to call a child but if you love it so much change your name to knowledge but clearly you wouldn't like it as your name either which should tell you everything you need to know about the name

This has to be a wind up…. Knowledge is something most people have not a name… please don’t do this to your kid.. use Jamie Knowledge Smith instead and give your kid a fighting chance of not having to explain he has loopy parents

Oof I see this community does not hold back with their honest opinions

Well, this is why people post on it. People in your actual life may say ‘Oh — how unusual’ and change the subject. Here people will say.

I did expect mostly negative reaction. I know people prefer traditional names. But at the end of the day this is the internet and most of these people leaving their replies are doing so in a really rude manner so can I really put much into what rude people say? My man is very picky with names and he even likes it so there's one person who likes it other than me :)

Yes that's why I asked I know this is the internet and people are very blunt but to openly call me loopy was a choice.. a rude choice that lacks manners but a choice. I know I cant expect manners from the internet though

Why would I up and change my name to something that I'm trying to name my child's name we can't both have the same name what are you even talking about?? To say it's a cruel name is a bit dramatic.

You like it, he likes it - then what's the problem?
Go for it.
Just look at the ONS database for children's names. Registration is in the public domain and you can see how frequently names are given. This is such a rare name, they don't include it on the database. You can calculate how many children have been given this name of late.
He'll certainly be the only one in his class!
Good luck 🤞

I do think if there is rudeness you started it!

Wishimaywishimight · 14/06/2026 09:16

It's not a name though is it. It's just a word. You may as well just pick a random word from a dictionary and call your child that.

Would you like to go through saying "Hi, I'm Knowledge"?

Particularly difficult if he turns out to be not very bright...

I know 7 Uniques. I know 2 King's. I know 3 Indigo''s nicknamed Indi. I know 1 Ocean. 3 Stone's and a few Rock's. People use them as names because they like them. There is something ironic about a room full of Uniques. The same say as a person with the name Knowledge who is low ability. You can't tell who they will be when they are older or what difficulties they will have. Also, you need to be careful that the name isn't egotistical or tgat they aren't going to be bullied until adulthood.
