Iris, Daphne, Daisy or Hazel

Me again.

I am very nearly due with my first girl. I would really like a nature name and was leaning towards Daisy but DH finds it too twee and simple. He doesn't think it's interesting enough but he would go with it if I really want it.
Iris and Hazel are new contenders. Iris makes me think of rainbows and beautiful flowers whereas Hazel gives me autumny brown vibes. So I'm perhaps leaning more towards Iris as it's spring. I quite like Rissy as an affectionate name.
I like that Hazel has links to Irish mythology, as my son's have Irish names, so it's also a strong contender (someone mentioned this on another thread).
Daphne is a long term favourite but it's not sticking somehow.

Help me decide please!

I think with Daisy, even though it's been popular for years, it sounds quite different to other popular names. Like Ella, Ellie, Lyra, Isla, Layla, Maya, Mia, Maia etc all sound similar whereas at least with Daisy it has it's own strong sound to me.

Daisy is pretty enough but there are a few similar names - Maisie, Darcy, Dulcie.

I really like Flora, I know a very cute baby Flora.

Other nature ideas:
Summer
Meadow
Linden
Seren
Maple
Eira
Linnet
Pearl
Sage
Fleur
Ember
Wren
Primrose

Emerald? Nickname Emmie? Too much?
Her birthstone will be Emerald 🤔

Some of these have been vetoed by DH (Pearl and Primrose), others are friends or families children - Summer, Wren and
Meadow (we both particularly loved Meadow, but it's a cousins daughter) or just not quite our taste. Thank you though.

They are all nice names (except Rissy… sorry) so just choose whichever you like best! My favourite is probably Hazel but it seems half of us think of nature and the other half think it’s dowdy!

For nicknames for Iris i wouldn’t worry too much. You can always call her pumpkin or squidge when she’s a baby.

Thefinalcountup · 07/05/2026 14:43

Rissy really hasn't gone down well 😂

Iris all the way!

Thefinalcountup · 07/05/2026 18:07

Iris is really growing on me.

Daisy is a bit dated.
Iris is too popular.
Hazel is ok but a bit harsh
Daphne is lovely.

I prefer Emerald to all of the suggestions.

OP we have a lot of crossover with the names we like for girls and I’m not joking, when I was pregnant with my DD, I too considered Emerald. I kind of loved it…. although deep down didn’t feel it was really ‘us’. DH was definitely not on board although TBF he had to be convinced to go with Iris.

Emerald….😍 It’s pretty showbiz!

Thefinalcountup · 08/05/2026 08:00

Haha really!! I like that Emerald gives Emmie, I really like Emmie. We are not show biz people though. We are walks in the woods, read a book, potter down to the beach type people 😂
Although I guess she might be show biz!
Its kind of hard to imagine her being an Emerald. It's very pretty though.

It sounds like a description of eye colour.

Hazel does sound nice and isn't floral. Wouldn't be good if the surname is Atkins. Hazel .

Yes, I don't think Iris and Hazel work together - though would be good if she became an optometrist!

It doesn't really give me show biz vibes to be honest.

Ruby does, as I always think of Ruby Wax, but I know a very demure, bookish Emerald, so to me it sits more with nature names - sort of green and minerally!

I think it has an elegance that Ruby and Pearl and other names of that ilk do not.

Tootingbec · 08/05/2026 10:31

Iris is a beautiful name that will age really well as your daughter grows up. Also makes me thing of creative people like Iris Murdoch and Iris Appfle. I quite like Daphne as well though.

Nicknames just emerge don’t they? You can’t force a nickname. Friends at school will decide if Iris gets converted to Rissy or Irie or whatever! Your nickname for her will end up being something random that bares no relation to the name (if my experience with my DC is anything to go by!)

Daisy is a bit twee and not sure it works as a name for adults. But if you like it how about Margaret and have Daisy as a diminutive?

FancyGoose · 08/05/2026 10:55

Iris or Hazel are my faves. I know a young Iris and her nickname is 'I' - not used at school etc but by family.

Lins77 · 08/05/2026 18:18

Absolutely love Iris. It's one of my favourite names.

I like all your names, but Daphne is my second favourite. Daisy seems very popular.

franksmama · 08/05/2026 18:20

I love Daisy. Could never use it though because it rhymes with our surname 😩

Thefinalcountup · 08/05/2026 19:19

I really like Violet, I feel like it's a good middle ground between Daisy and Iris, but I mentioned it to DH today and he says it's his least favourite name ever and he would far rather have Daisy.

OP posts:
ChocolateCinderToffee · 08/05/2026 21:49

Iris.
Daphne second.

If it's any comfort, when Violet first started coming up on these threads I was a fan, but there are soooo many now that I think it will become a bit commonplace, if that's something that bothers you.

What does your DH think of Emerald?

My DH would go for Emerald, but he has totally vetoed Violet.
His favourites are Hazel and Iris. I think I'm leaning towards Daphne Iris at the moment. Due in 2 days!

A few suggestions you might like based on what you have liked already and what type of people you describe yourselves as:

Sylvie
Ruby
Ivy
Clara
Fern
Erin

Good luck with the birth @Thefinalcountup

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 11/05/2026 19:36

I like Jasmine and Jazz is a cool nickname!

Rosetyler1 · 11/05/2026 19:53

I like Hazel the best.

Tooearlyjigsaw · 11/05/2026 20:34

Hes Irish and some of the very girly English vintage names are quite jarring to him, whereas to me they are my childhood faves!

Growing up in Ireland in the 70s and 80s, Hazel was the only one of your favourites that was in any way popular. Daisy, Iris and Violet were very rare then, though checking the name charts shows they’ve increased in popularity in recent years. Daphne continues to be rare. I know a couple of Hazels but nobody with the other names.

Hazel would also be my favourite of those names, really like it. Maybe it’s familiarity, I don’t know. Violet is my least favourite, really don’t like it.

Emerald is almost non-existent as a name in Ireland. It seems really twee to me, probably because Ireland is occasionally referred to as The Emerald Isle 🫣
