Iris, Daphne, Daisy or Hazel

Me again.

I am very nearly due with my first girl. I would really like a nature name and was leaning towards Daisy but DH finds it too twee and simple. He doesn't think it's interesting enough but he would go with it if I really want it.
Iris and Hazel are new contenders. Iris makes me think of rainbows and beautiful flowers whereas Hazel gives me autumny brown vibes. So I'm perhaps leaning more towards Iris as it's spring. I quite like Rissy as an affectionate name.
I like that Hazel has links to Irish mythology, as my son's have Irish names, so it's also a strong contender (someone mentioned this on another thread).
Daphne is a long term favourite but it's not sticking somehow.

Help me decide please!

We considered this but somehow it feels a bit too 'out there'. I can imagine I introducing any of the others but not Marigold for some reason.
Daisy is beautiful. If it was just me I think I would have stuck at Daisy. Do you find it very popular?

Daisy is the only one at her school. We have one at the school I work at.

Pointynoseowner · 06/05/2026 20:14

Iris ,don't like the others.

Giraffehaver · 06/05/2026 22:16

Hazel and Iris are beautiful

KeeleyJ · 06/05/2026 22:21

Hazel is okay.

Don't like Iris - part of your eyeballs, don't like Daphne due to that awful laughing woman in Neighbours, Daisy is a dog's name a best.

What about Rowan/Rowena?

Notellinganyone · 06/05/2026 22:22

I love Iris ( not your shortened version though) and also like Daphne. Have you considered Sorrel if you like plant names? Daisy is dull but Marguerite is classic and you could have Daisy as a nickname.

boredwithfoodprob · 06/05/2026 22:24

I love Daisy. Weirdly I don’t find it popular at all where we live although my children are 11 and up so maybe it’s a generational thing. Anyway, it’s a gorgeous, cute, fresh and fun name that suits a child and adult alike. I know an adult one and that gets shortened to Daiz which I like too!

Do I need to accept there is no shortened version or variation of Iris? I struggle with that.
We tend to play with names in our family. Irie? Maybe I'll just nickname her rainbow!
I think Marguerite is just too big a name for us.
Sorrel has been considered but discounted in the end.

For me I can’t think of a nickname for Iris that’s nice. It’s only two syllables so doesn’t really need to be shortened and Iris is so much nicer than Rissy I think, so seems a shame?

I actually think just Ris is nicer as a nickname, like a casual one for fun, rather than a permanent thing used more than the actual name.

Did you consider Willow? Or Ivy? Or Robin/Robyn?

BleedinglyObvious · 06/05/2026 22:58

It's only 4 letters. It doesn't need shortening or nickname.

Chickoletta · 06/05/2026 23:00

They are all beautiful: I have had dogs named Hazel, Daisy and Daphne but only because my dogs all have beautiful names, not that they are dog names! Classic and lovely.

mumuseli · 06/05/2026 23:07

I know quite a few Daisys (age 10 upwards).
They're all nice names. I think Daphne is the most unusual.

I just find we tend to play with names, I can't help myself! One of my sons has a name with a y ending already, not Cody but similar letters, so that name is left as it is, and I'm happy with it. The other two get shortened in some form.
I wouldn't feel the need to cute-ify Daisy, I would leave it as it is, same for a name like Rosie.
But with Iris, it feels so grown up somehow, I think it's the S ending maybe. I know this isn't a popular Mumsnet opinion but it is putting me off the name a bit.
Iris is a beautiful sound though and the meaning is amazing, so I'm trying to work with it.

I know what you mean about it being quite grown up. It’s a beautiful name though. How about Issy as a nickname? That could be cute and nice?

Issy is quite cute! Someone will come along in a second and say it's hideous 😂
But I guess if it's just a home nickname it doesn't matter.

Another no for Daisy. I also find it twee.

I like Iris.

Also Marigold (Goldie) suggested upthread.

Edited

At least it doesn't sound like it's short for Rissole.

My Iris is about to bloom so certainly the right time of year!

AnneShirleyOfAvonlea · 07/05/2026 00:06

Daisy or Daphne

Mine have been and gone.

AndCallMeNancy · 07/05/2026 00:32

I have an Iris. We get a lot of compliments on her name but I know it’s a bit marmite, makes some people think of eyeballs or old women etc…. I think that’s fine, it hopefully means it won’t get too popular! I had loved the name for years, it was my only consideration for a girl - absolutely no regrets 12 years on. She also really likes her name which is nice.

In terms of nicknames, we have some that bear no relation to her name, just daft pet names that stuck but we do also call her Izzle sometimes. When pregnant I had imagined maybe calling her Izzy ‘for short’ but honestly Iris is such a beautiful name it never took off.

For me Daisy is lovely but far too popular, I know quite a few. I want to like Hazel, it’s almost cute but somehow always tips into dowdy territory for me… and Daphne, actually sounds really sweet and floaty but I can’t get rid of the Neighbours/1980s connotations, sorry!

I think you might need to wait to see what feels right when she arrives. All the best!

HoraceCope · 07/05/2026 06:09

i like Ivy

coronafiona · 07/05/2026 06:22

Iris is awful.
sounds like Irene.

Are we just going to jump to eyeballs instead of remembering its a flower? Since it's a girl's name that's where my brain goes first personally!

TheChicDreamer · 07/05/2026 07:55

Iris is the only one that, to me, has longevity. It’s a classic. Although please for the love of god don’t call her Rissy as a nn.

Hazel is sweet but has boomer connotations.
Daphne is ok but harsh sounding and will date again easily.
Daisy is fine however there are about a million Gen Z Daisies out there. If you don’t mind that, it’s a good bet.
