Immense baby name regret

SLNM · 17/04/2026 03:27

Baby is 3 months old, and I have started to regret her name. We named her Desiree (which is a name that DH had suggested). It is mainly the comments of others that are causing my regret. When we go to the shops, we get reactions that seem negative when someone asks what her name is. My parents do not like her name. I want to change her name but am not certain that I will be able to convince DH. It doesn't help that she is likely to be our only child (which only makes the regret stronger).

We had considered Isabel, Jacqueline, Lucy, and Scarlett as well, but DH wasn't as keen on those as I was. What would you do?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
FlippantHeck · 17/04/2026 06:22

Yeah I’d shorten to Ree (pronounced Ray) for day to day. It feels like a bit of a mouthful otherwise

Sillyme1 · 17/04/2026 06:25

Personally I hate it, but I’m a traditionalist. Picture her at 50, or 40 something. How will she feel about it then. She won’t always be a cute child. Lucy is lovely!

Creepybookworm · 17/04/2026 06:32

I like it. It's so unusual and it's vintage in a good way. It's meaning is also lovely. I assume she is a longed for child. Loads of cool nicknames too.

3luckystars · 17/04/2026 06:35

Does it suit her? Could you shorten it to Rae?

I knew a Desiree, she pronounced it Des seer aye, we worked together she told me how to pronounce her name and I got it. She was really friendly and I still remember her and that was many years ago.

Westfacing · 17/04/2026 06:44

I like it!

There are so many uncommon names around I'm surprised people are cheeky enough to make rude comments

Are you pronouncing it Dezzy Rae? Both of those would be great to use and will probably develop into her nickname by her friends!

I do like the name. It is only the reactions that cause me to doubt our decision. We get comments on how American and unusual it is. I've also become aware that many consider it to be "chavvy". Knowing how it is viewed by others has made me realise that it won't be an easy name for her to live with.

It is really the only name that DH loved. He's not even that keen on her middle name.

I'm very surprised about the chavvy connotations. The only times I've come across someone called Desiree they were older trustafarian type women. I assumed it was a name they had chosen for themselves as adults to suit their alternative life styles.

If you like the name you should stick with it. Doesn't matter what others think.

Another vote to stick with the name if you and your husband both like it!

What is her middle name?

It's Joy.

I knew a lovely, French Desiree when my DD was young.

If you like the name, stick with it. It doesn’t matter what other people think.

Wecanbeheroes26 · 17/04/2026 06:51

I love Des or Desi as a nickname. Have just read her middle name is Joy. Could DJ be another nickname

im sure she will she will "grow" into her name...why not "shorten" it and just call her "ree" as a nickname..then when shes older she can change it by deed poll if she hates it herself.

LightOfTheLake · 17/04/2026 06:54

It’s a great name. I have an less - common name too, I need to spell it out whenever I have to give my name to people, and it used to be remarked on all the time for being unusual (less so these days), but I have never once felt that people were “categorizing” me by it, I just don’t think that’s a thing at all. I personally love having a ‘different ish” name and I’m sure she will be saying the same to you in the future :)

Cathmawr · 17/04/2026 06:54

I think its a great name OP! With excellent diminutive potential, I know two toddler girls (with different names) who go by Ray and Dez, both very cute. Desi also is a cool name.

I think your parents are rude to let it be known they don't like it. I don't think my parents were a big fan of my DDs name but they knew to keep it to themselves 😅 and it's 100% her name now and suits her.

Gray67 · 17/04/2026 06:55

I really don't know where you have got the chavy thing from. It is a beautiful name. I do also prefer it to Jacqueline.

I should also say that I think baby name regret is extremely common. I had it. Now love my kids names. You just have to get used to it.

Girrrrrrlll · 17/04/2026 06:58

I like it. It's a beautiful name. I'm surprised anyone has said it's chavvy. To me it is completely not chavvy whatsoever, in fact the opposite of chavvy. Quite rare but not yoonique.

Thank you! We're pronouncing it dezz-ah-ray.

Both my DC have abbreviations of their full names - think Bex, from Rebecca.
TBH, Desiree would not be my choice but I love Rae
If this was the only name you both agreed on then you should probably keep it.
People's reactions will lessen as time goes by. They will get used to it. Pretty sure my parents didn't like my DC2 name initially. They now love it

Only change it if you genuinely hate it.

JuliettaCaeser · 17/04/2026 07:02

I prefer it to Jacqueline. But I have met two really horrible Jacquis in my life to me it’s an evil name! Stick with Desiree.

SLNM · 17/04/2026 07:04

Thank you to everyone for all of the kind comments!

OP posts:
TikTokker · 17/04/2026 07:04

I can’t stand Jacqueline so think you picked well

Twiglets1 · 17/04/2026 07:05

If you don't like it or don't like the reactions to it, better to change it sooner rather than later. It definitely does sound an American name.

You need to talk to your husband about it. Does he like her middle name, Joy? Maybe that could be a compromise, assuming you both like her middle name.

ExOptimist · 17/04/2026 07:06

To me first and foremost it will always be a variety of potato, that's what came immediately to my mind. It also sounds quite a "black" name which may surprise some people if that's not your background. But if you love it then you should keep it..

ACR7 · 17/04/2026 07:10

Some people will always dislike your choice but if you like it that’s all that matters. My Daughter has lovely but relatively common first name and May as her middle name. Not double barrelled just a middle name but that gets slated in here but she is named after my nanna whose name was exactly the same with May as her middle name too so I don’t care what people think. I love it and know my nanna would be really touched

Alltheusefulitems · 17/04/2026 07:10

Desiree Joy is a gorgeous name and as you both love it, stick with it! In a few months when her little personality starts to shine through you won't imagine calling her anything else.

SLNM · 17/04/2026 07:00

Thank you! We're pronouncing it dezz-ah-ray.

I don't think I've heard that pronunciation, and I'm not sure how it works with the spelling. So that would be my reservation. I wouldn't want to have to constantly correct people or hear my name mispronounced for all my life.

How does the i become ah? I've only heard DEZZ-i-ray/DEZZ-uh-ray, and Dez-EE-ray.

FryingPam · 17/04/2026 07:12

I think Desiree Joy is a great name, I picture a cool and confident young woman. Many great nn options to choose from…Desi, Ray, DJ.
