Mystical/Edgy Baby Names?

beardedirislover · 04/04/2026 21:10

Starting a random thread cos I am bored.

For boys and girls, what are some sort of mystical, fairylike names that aren't too "affected".

Im looking for cool baby names.

Don't want them to be "trad" and don't want them to be super "posh" rather a bit mystical but edgy.

These kinds of names are all very well for cute toddlers dressed up playing in meadows for Instagram, but what if they want to become PM or a serious person in their chosen field- might not be helpful.

Shergar?
(Or is that from the 60s?)

Nope. And not Red Alligator, either, even though DM had her once a year flutter on him in the Grand National - the year he won.

Macaroni46 · 07/04/2026 18:46

Why? Don’t saddle your kid with a weird name.

DemBonesDemBones · 07/04/2026 18:47

@Macaroni46why saddle them with an unoriginal one?

Minerva isn't bad actually - and Minnie is sweet as a nn.

Cydonia sounds a bit like a kidney disease. Maybe I'm thinking kidney stones. Or mountains in Wales.

Edited

Nobody ever likes Cydonia 😂 It’s an ancient city in Crete and an area of Mars, so the meaning isn’t bad!

I've always thought the name Dawn should really be seen as a somewhat mystical/hippie name but it just isn't. I'd be very surprised to meet a baby Dawn now but it's no different to something like River really.

I know an Ambrose. You are right that he is independent school schooled. He is bookish, but gets away with it.

I like Ambrose and think it's due a come back. I did my family tree a while back and was surprised to see a smattering of Ambrose's in the 15/1600's. And many xtophers!

Tarn (boy)
Maia (girl)
Astrid (girl)
Byron (boy)

I think it's due a comeback too.

Honestly, for me. More power to them.

Gandalf. Moth. Cobweb. Mustardseed. Tinkerbell. Galadriel.

Cobweb! 😂

Giraffehaver · 07/04/2026 22:47

Emrys and Phaedra

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/04/2026 22:56

Emrys is one of my favourite.
I would have used Lyra for a girl as it's beautiful.

Also Castor, Finn or Owain for boys and Astra, Freya or Nova for a girl.

Merlin
Gawain
Isolde
Arwen
Ambrose
Olympia
Hector
Diana

It depends on the demograpgic I think. Prep and Eton fine, the local comp in a non leafy area, possibly more difficult.

Diana is fine but you’re getting torn to shreds for being called Ambrose or Gawain in boarding school. In fact the bullying in those schools is probably worse than most ordinary schools I say bullying but battery and rape are more accurate.

i get your point but also, I’m a bit more “teach your kid to have enough self worth and confidence” to push back and be different, be cool and tell the rest to politely get over themselves.

Worked with me.

I have an unusual name. Ive never met another with it. I have heard of others but rare. I often Have to spell it as it can be done several ways.

I have never minded the unusualness or spelling it. Yet it is the 2 things that always comes up here as against unusual names. Its not always the case children will dislike an unusual name.

I have an unusual name. It is both spelt and pronounced wrong on a daily basis. I find that highly irritating.

So like I said its not always the case.

We have similar experiences but different views on how that impacts us.

I'm with @Macaroni46 . Hardly anyone can say it and it gets misspelt all the time especially on anything where the spelling matters.
