Mystical/Edgy Baby Names?

beardedirislover · 04/04/2026 21:10

Starting a random thread cos I am bored.

For boys and girls, what are some sort of mystical, fairylike names that aren't too "affected".

Im looking for cool baby names.

Don't want them to be "trad" and don't want them to be super "posh" rather a bit mystical but edgy.

I'm with @Macaroni46 . Hardly anyone can say it and it gets misspelt all the time especially on anything where the spelling matters.

Again that means we have different experiences. I do not mind people mispronouncing my name the first times. I never mind spelling it.

I have 2 dds with similar issues they feel like I do.

Due to this I will often comment that it is not a given that people will mind spelling or pronouncing their name for others. Im not saying everyone feels like I do. Im stating it differs. So lets not generalise.

HudALledrith · 08/04/2026 16:46

@Enko , it's not a given, and I'm sure it depends on the name. Without knowing the names, I can't tell if your name and mine compare.

I grew up in Brighton and loads of children had these sort of names. It got to the point where Elizabeth would have been “different”.

Names I can think of:

Boys
Peregrine
Orlando
Ferdinand
Lysander
Pendragon
Axel
Tristan

Girls
Elektra
Cressida
Ursula
Persephone
Antigone
Ariadne
Circe
Minerva
Astrid
Allegra

CruCru · 11/04/2026 11:15

Also - I know of a girl called Sorrel. I don’t much like it though - it sounds too much like “Sorrow” in a Brighton accent.

Extrachoc · 11/04/2026 11:29

Zephyr
Rex (‘king’)

Extrachoc · 11/04/2026 11:39

Asterion

Ariadne
Chryseis
Idalia
Medea
Leda

Yeah- similar here (not Brighton, but that sort of vibe). Ds1 is named after a family member along the lines of 'David' and people were really surprised and commented favourably how nice it was in a sea of out there names. (At least, that's what theys aid to my face!).

Personally I love the name Elowen and there is a poster on here with the name Leveret in her user name which I thought would rock for a girl.

Druid has to be Getafix surely!

But it’s not just the first time. It’s constantly, daily. I correct people and it’s still spelt wrong. Time after time. It’s tiresome and unnecessary. Just because my ‘D’M decided my name should be spelt the way it is in her country rather than changing one letter to make it phonetically suited to English. I think she was selfish doing that. Interestingly, both she and my father had ordinary names so they had no experience of what having an unusual name is like.

But I do have that experience and don't mind it. Nor does my children. Like I keep saying it differs it is not a given people will feel one way or the other.

As for everytime if people dont get my name right after a few tries I stop answering them. Amazing how quick they then can get it right

HudALledrith · 11/04/2026 17:17

There was a food writer being interviewed on the radio yesterday and the presenter got her name wrong. She corrected him, rightly so, but it still comes across as being picky. Her first name is very unusual and sounds like the one he used apart from one sound. (compares to something like calling a Hebe Phoebe)

I agree with you, @Macaroni46 , it is every time you interact with someone new. My parent had ordinary names too.

What about when it’s persistently spelt wrong? I’ve got work colleagues who misspell it every time they email me, work documents with it wrong, newsletters to the public with it wrong, etc etc

Mine is persistently spelt wrong

I get it mispronounced regularly

I am told its a boys name (unisex) - I once had someone from British gas tell me I couldn't possibly be a woman with that name as the computer only had it as a mans name. I told her I had given birth to 4 children so I figured I knew best if I was male or female

I am asked what it is short for (2 syllables 6 letters - not a short name)

I have people wanting to shorten it - I do NOT ansver to the short version as it gives me the creeps. I make it clear the first time that I dont answer to that and then do not going forward.

As for work colleguage I have only had that issue once persistently and I started mispelling her very common name (think Ann instead of Anne type thing) she corrected me after 3 goes and I responded I thought since she didnt bother getting mine right I could do the same to her. She never got it wrong again.

However even with that. I like having an unusual name I dont mind spelling it or pronouncing it. I liked it that much I gave 2 of my children names like this. They are both in their 20s and like their names. Rolls their eyes at people getting it wrong.

My point isnt that you should not mind. You do and thats your experience. I am not sayjng that is any different.

What I am saying is that this is not a given. Not everyone minds this. So when I see comments on MN that they will have a life time of mispronouncing or misspellings I always comnet that they may not mind this. As neither like or dislike is a given.

It doesn't matter how many times you say this, you come across as that person.

tartyflette · 12/04/2026 13:42

My name was very unusual in the 50s when i was born and I knew no-one with the exact same name throughout my school days and university.
But unfortunately it had a ‘moment’ in he 80s and 90s with pop stars changing their names to it etc so of course it is now rather naff and dated. 🙄
