Mystical/Edgy Baby Names?

beardedirislover · 04/04/2026 21:10

Starting a random thread cos I am bored.

For boys and girls, what are some sort of mystical, fairylike names that aren't too "affected".

Im looking for cool baby names.

Don't want them to be "trad" and don't want them to be super "posh" rather a bit mystical but edgy.

I have an 'out there' name. Never met another. Never even HEARD of someone with my name until I was in my twenties and I was outraged lmao.

But, in response to opinions of 'please don't do that to the children', I just wanted to chip in with my experience of loving my name, my whole life, and also loving the fact that I was the only one.

And no, I'm not telling you all my name, sorry! Too outing, unfortunately

Me too. Never met anyone with my name, though there was a racehorse in the 1950s.
Once I got on Facebook I had a search and found about a dozen others around the world, though none so far in the UK.

I know someone called Santana but I dont like it really tbh. Unusual name os not always a flex

No totally, what I find fascinating is how people suit or don't suit their name. Or how also you can "look at someone" and be like "they look like a Michael" is there a science (or pseudo science) behind this...

My name has been mentioned several times on this thread.

Never had a problem with my name feeling ‘out there’ and wasn’t bullied for it.

I like Willow. Not particularly uncommon, but it has an other worldly feel and I think it’s very pretty.

Yes, feels floaty, Willow sounds like someone who is a bit mystical

Elfie.

Lilith has very negative associations which I'd look into before committing.

Riven. Carrion. Gawain.

I know there’s a character called Carrion in Quicksilver, but I would strongly recommend people look it up in a dictionary before using it for a child because it means dead and rotting animals.

Yes. It’s essentially ‘Emma gave birth today to Baby Carcass, weighing eight pounds two ounces. Mother and child are doing well.’

Azazel Im obsessed with

Azazel is a demon who has a goat sacrificed in his name and it's where we get scapegoat from.

IeatPotNoodles · 07/04/2026 17:00

I’ve always thought Misty is a lovely name

i get your point but also, I’m a bit more “teach your kid to have enough self worth and confidence” to push back and be different, be cool and tell the rest to politely get over themselves.

Worked with me.

Yeah but no-one is ever going to name their darling baby boy Puck, are they?
That is just willful stupidity. And no, it’s not cool.
(Reminds me of the old country song , A Boy Named Sue. A cautionary tale.)

Merlin
Gawain
Isolde
Arwen

It depends on the demograpgic I think. Prep and Eton fine, the local comp in a non leafy area, possibly more difficult.

Carouselfish · 07/04/2026 17:16

Puck was a young man on MTV The Real World back in the 90s. So yes.

I actually like Huck a lot.
Orion
Raphael
I've known a Talon, Jago, Lucien, Rio, Blaise.
Ive always loved River because of River Phoenix.

Girls
Lyonesse
Sirena
Kismet
Tempest

Exactly. A lot of these names are not much used for a reason. See also Lilltih.

I know an Ambrose. You are right that he is independent school schooled. He is bookish, but gets away with it.

Minerva
Cydonia

There are lots of gorgeous names in the ancient Greek myths that nobody ever uses, at least not in the UK. Unfortunately if you read the myth it often turns out they were killed horribly or raped or something.

Minerva isn't bad actually - and Minnie is sweet as a nn.

Cydonia sounds a bit like a kidney disease. Maybe I'm thinking kidney stones. Or mountains in Wales.

DemBonesDemBones · 07/04/2026 18:05

I have an unusual name. Only met one other and that was my Nana. It’s a mumsnet favourite nowadays but bet the play it safe-ers would have turned their noses up at it 40 years ago.

DemBonesDemBones · 07/04/2026 18:07

And to add, would rather have almost any name mentioned on this thread than yet another Imogen Isabelle, Lily, Evie etc.

LassiKopiano24 · 07/04/2026 18:13
