My name is on your list. I’ve never considered it a beautiful name (I go by a shortened version of it now as I really didn’t like it growing up), but seeing someone say it’s beautiful has made me smile.

It's musk rose. Honeysuckle is woodbine. Both mentioned by Oberon in a lovely, dreamy passage.

Woodbine, sweet musk rose and eglantine are all mentioned so I don't think so.

Chilbolton80 · 04/06/2026 14:51

According to Google translate, eglantine is briar rose....

How do you pronounce Loinnir?

How do you pronounce Loinnir?

I think it’s like what I would say if I saw something written Lunna. But I’m not an Irish speaker.

How do you pronounce Loinnir?

If it’s Irish it’s pronounced as in this link:
https://www.teanglann.ie/en/fuaim/Loinnir
The letter r is always pronounced in the vast majority of Irish accents.

I don’t know if it’s Irish though.
For a start pp apologised for the lack of correct accents, but the Irish word doesn’t have any accents.
Secondly, though it is an Irish word meaning radiance/brightness, it’s not used as a name in Ireland.

How do you pronounce Loinnir?

How can you say it’s the most beautiful name you’ve heard when you don’t know how it sounds?

ETA Sorry, I quoted the wrong person.
The above question was for @PermanentTemporary.

Giovanna - another Italian one.

This is going to be overkill as a response, but as there’s a lot of responses - I first heard of Loinnir as a name when Roísín McAliskey called her daughter by that name. It seems that I must have remembered the fadas used for Roísín and thought somehow that I’d seen them on Loinnir as well. Apologies.

Then I interpreted ‘heard’ in the thread here as ‘heard of’. I pronounced Loinnir differently in my head (not being an Irish speaker) and thought the sound in my head was very beautiful, but I also think it is visually beautiful as a word. I checked the pronunciation as best I could when the question was asked here.

ConstanzeMozart · 05/06/2026 16:47

It does look really beautiful.

Fair enough. I do like it, the look of it especially.

The correct sound would be hard to get right if you didn’t speak Irish…to be honest I don’t know if it’s a great idea to guess at pronunciations of words in a language you don’t speak and then recommend them to others. Though I guess it’s happened often enough with names 😅

Loinnir isn’t usually used as a name. It’s not listed in Irish naming records. Who knows, maybe it will take off? Fiadh came out of nowhere twenty odd years ago to top the charts within a few years 🤷‍♀️
