I'm due my first baby (didn't find out sex!) in March and we're struggling with names. DH is a lot more relaxed and thinks we'll look at the baby and know, I remember how long it took to name the dog and want some ideas 🤣.

We seem to b picky and don't like (to be clear, don't like for our child, lots of these names are gorgeous but I just can't see myself parenting one)

  1. Names ending in the ee sound (Lilly/Alfie etc)
  2. Names ending in a vowel sound in general actually (Layla/Noah etc)
  3. Old fashioned names (Dorothy/Stanley etc)
  4. Long names that can be shortened (Victoria/ Alexander etc)

I do like Celtic heritage names, which is our background (Maeve/Cian etc)
I also like strong sounding names with consonant endings (Elliott/Erin etc)

Anyone fancy a challenge and like to offer some suggestions?

Ethan? Max? Harriet (if not too old fashioned)?

I really like Max and Harriet!

I like Max for a girl too, although not Maxine! That might just be a stranger things influence though.

Edited

I've never heard of that name before!

I also like Welsh names - I particularly like Ffion and I do like Bronwyn too.

Some of these feel a little bit too Americanised for me, but that might be personal preference!

However, I love Roisin, it's beautiful!

I looked at the ONS top 100 baby names for a few years (leave gaps of c.5 years between). It gave me lots of ideas.

The top 10 in the last few years will be very common, but if you look at names after that, they drop off quite considerably in popularity, but are generally quite nice and not completely out there names. It saves you having to trawl through the name lists looking at every name under the sun.

That said, we didn't end up using any of the names on our short lists (we also didn't know sex). They just didn't feel right when little one arrived. So still leave yourself open to other ideas.

Can't do Gwendolyn thanks to Gwendoline Mary Lacey 🤣🤣🤣 (Malory Towers)

Megan and Callum fit the bill- do they sound too early 00s?!

@NailsForChristmas that's incredibly helpful advice. I looked at last year and went into panic mode

Early 00s was 25 years ago, so I think they sound fresh.

HollyGolightly4 · 02/02/2026 18:09

This is true @Silverbirchleaf in my head it's only 10 years ago!

Not Bronwyn or Gwendolyn - the yn ending is masculine (Bronwen and Gwendolen are ok. Gwendolen is Gwen-DOL-en)
Not Megan because of Meghan.
Ffion and Fionn get mixed up.
Sadhbh and Tadhg are both great.

@bells456 love Oisin, but made the mistake of telling my mum! Lorcan is great too. I like Robyn too.

My sister has a Liam and a Niamh, both of which I also love but can't reuse!

Girls:
Iseult is beautiful imho. It’s not widely used, which for me is a factor.
Róise ( Rose in Irish ) pronounced Ro sha as you like Róisin and it’s a wee bit different.
Darerca - Da rer ka, the patron saint of Valentia island in Kerry.
Boys:
Breifne (Brefknee )
Shane
Tiarnan (Tearnan)
Rory

Thank you for the ideas!

Can't hear Rosalind without thinking of Bob Mortimer singing "Rosalind's a f---- nightmare!" Terrible because it's a wonderful name. I'm not going to comment on Dylan after the last thread on Dylan v Jack descended!
