I'm pregnant and I LOVE the name Malcolm. I think its cool and added bonus that its Scottish. My husband and everyone hates Malcolm however. I may still use it.

Any suggestions for like wise names (not Hamish) or good Scottish names? Duncan, Rory and Andrew have been ruled out by husband.

I am with your DH, Malcolm isn’t great.
Are you in Scotland op? The reason i ask is my son has a Scottish name, already mentioned on this thread, very normal name up here, he works in England and his name is regularly spelt and pronounced wrong.

Cailean
Struan
Innes

I heard a toddler with the name Sandy recently, I went to school with a few Sandy’s in the 80’s and it was considered old fashioned then but I actually thought it was cute for this toddler

ilparadodosdoltos · 27/01/2026 23:03

Loads of Davids, Andrews and Euans at school in Edinburgh on the eighties of that helps!

Have to agree that Malcolm is awful.

Malcolm is fine. I know a few and they're all nice. They usually get called Mal or Malc.

It doesn't seem like a child's name, but there were 10 of them registered in Scotland last year (same as Martin, Jonathan, Alan, Isaiah and Brady).

Ewan but I am completely biased 💙

I don’t like Malcolm either, but whatever you choose, why are you sharing it with everyone else? Folk are far less likely to offer opinions when you introduce the baby when he’s born.

DoggieNamechange · 28/01/2026 19:27

My DH and DM are Scottish and I ADORE some of these names. I have girls (with Scottish names!) so well jel of these getting boys to name.

Angus, Fraser, Hamish, Alistair lovely 🤩

I quite like Malcolm but understand why not. Friends have a Bruce!

Oh, or a curve ball - Macbeth?? Maccers for short. Perhaps not as he may go into acting.
