Personally I like elegant names like Genevieve, also Mary, that never stopped being popular.

Does anyone know any names that used to be considered “old lady names” but are coming back.

my husband is French and he likes Monette after his grandmother

Monette and Ophelie both lovely names.

OMG!!! Vera is a beautiful name

I'll tell her someone 'in my computer" says so.

Im waiting for the 70s names to come back. Looking forward to all the Rachels, Rebeccas, and Deborahs.

They are all good names, I have always particularly liked Deborah (Debra). Names like Margaret and Mavis will never seem unfrumpy to me. If I was going to have another child (bit late for that) and it was a girl Deborah would be a definite contender in 2026.

Ada is a lovely name!

Ada is an awful frumpy name!

Abracadabra12345 · 21/01/2026 14:47

I know a young Agatha and Ethel and written, they’re lovely but said aloud I find them ugly. Margaret and Margot are even worse, and other names which have been mentioned here.

I look forward to a return of the softer names

I love Ada. It goes also with that hipster-ugly vibe that saw people using Ursula, Maud, Olive etc.

I do love Deborah, especially as a Marc Bolan fan 😁

I think a lot of 'old lady names' are back- and have been for a while. I know 7-10 year olds called Elsie, Ivy, Ada, Lillian, Penny, Edith, Mabel, Rita, Dorothy, Mary, Ingrid, Connie...

I haven't heard Edna, Hilda, Audrey, Margaret, Christine, Kathleen, Maureen, Enid Glynis, Beverley, Maud, Ethel, Bertha - maybe they're due a comeback!

Audrey is nice but of course it makes me think of Audrey Hepburn or Audrey from Twin Peaks (many moons ago). So good associations. Some old fashioned names just bring to mind loud mouthed (but salt of the earth) characters from old Coronation Street. So although great characters, I would find them off putting for names today (Vera, Ivy, Ida, Elsie, Betty, Hilda etc). I guess a lot has to do with the parents’ ages and their cultural references. I’m in my 60s and don’t like some of the old fashioned frumpy names.

I really hate that vibe. It seems to be one you either love or hate.

It’s so interesting how people’s tastes differ from hearing the same words. I hate all those names (as in I would hate to be called any of them and would never lumber a child with one), except Eva and Helena. I would prefer Eve over Eva and absolutely not Evie).

Great list thanks. The only one I don’t like is Marjorie but that’s cause it’s was my teacher’s name in high school…not a very nice lady. It has nothing to do with the name though

Why do you hate them? They’re all classics, feminine but solid imo. Not hugely common but everyone knows how to pronounce them. I’ll admit that some of them wouldn’t be very complimentary on a girl who wasn’t very attractive… which does make me rethink some.

I think our ages definitely have something to do with our preferences. You like Deborah which is one of the frumpiest names out there imo… but lots of women your age have that name whereas I’m 30 so it’s peoples mums/aunts names to me.

I know a toddler Rebecca! Actually really refreshing in a playgroup full of Olivias etc!

alexdgr8 · 21/01/2026 15:08

Not ophelia.
Wasn't she the one floating down the river. Dead.

stillnoideawhatimdoing · 21/01/2026 15:10

@ScaredOfFlying I know at least 5 Ada's! One Edna. Agreed it's cute but it does always make me think of the one from Incredibles...

Met a baby Winston recently, an absolute adorable ball of chub. Suited him to a t!! Vincent, Basil, Mabel, all back with a vengence!

ObladiObladah · 21/01/2026 15:12

I hope Wendy comes back in fashion soon

Around me all the girls seemed to be Nellie, Ada, Ava, Maude, Pearl - not really to my taste but I expect I will grow to like them.

Some names still sound nice but others seem to sound ugly. I wonder if that's just my perception - for example Dorothy is nice, Brenda sounds ugly. Enid sounds nice, Doris is ugly.

How dare you?! 🤬🤬🤬

(have a look at my name! 😂)

Winnie!
