Personally I like elegant names like Genevieve, also Mary, that never stopped being popular.

Does anyone know any names that used to be considered “old lady names” but are coming back.

my husband is French and he likes Monette after his grandmother

I’ve delivered a few thousand babies and have never ever delivered a John (even as a middle name).

I once mentioned to somebody that whilst Ruby is a lovely name, they should probably know that this would be my 5th in the same weekend. They reconsidered.

Ruby isn’t to my personal taste, but who cares?

My name is unique and has been a thorn in my side since I knew what it was! I used to pretend my name was Rebecca (one of the most popular names for girls born in the 80s) when we were on holiday or similar.

my husband is now asking if I like Ophelie, also French. I think pretty.

So many good names I think I’ll wait for the baby to be born and pick her name then

Not to be a downer but just to point out in many accents this will sound like 'Offal'-ee as in entrails of dead animals.

I think a lot of 'old lady names' are back- and have been for a while. I know 7-10 year olds called Elsie, Ivy, Ada, Lillian, Penny, Edith, Mabel, Rita, Dorothy, Mary, Ingrid, Connie...

I haven't heard Edna, Hilda, Audrey, Margaret, Christine, Kathleen, Maureen, Enid Glynis, Beverley, Maud, Ethel, Bertha - maybe they're due a comeback!

I’ve got an Audrey 😂❤️….kinda hope it doesn’t make a comeback 😂😂😂

stillnoideawhatimdoing · 21/01/2026 17:23

Missed the french connection!

In our circle among the under 6's there's a Juliette, Camille, Marie-Thérèse, Sylvie. Esme and Margot are so common I wouldn't even remember they were of French origin!

Maybe something ending in ette? They seem to feel old fashioned to me. Jeanette, Colette, Yvette?

I volunteer at Brownies. We have an Ayda,Ava Eva and Eve. We also have Emily,Emilie,Emilia, Amilia. They all wear the same Brownie uniform and seem to have long, blonde pony tails. All very confusing

I am from a Central European country and I named my now-teenager Mara (basically Mary) after my much loved, late grandmother, thinking I am making an eccentric choice, but I loved the name and it seemed easy to spell for English speakers.
it turns out, every time we visit my home country we meet little Maras (generally younger than my daughter, 12 and under)

Lilithgolightly · 21/01/2026 17:48

Emmeline, Odette, Sylvie, Celine, Clarisse, Celeste, Seraphine.

I love Ada. It goes also with that hipster-ugly vibe that saw people using Ursula, Maud, Olive etc.

It reminds me of Ada Lovelace.

A lovely classic name.

It’s so interesting how people’s tastes differ from hearing the same words. I hate all those names (as in I would hate to be called any of them and would never lumber a child with one), except Eva and Helena. I would prefer Eve over Eva and absolutely not Evie).

Evie seems quite dated now.

A few years ago.

Pretty much every girl ypu met was called eve Eva, evie, Ida, Ivy etc

Piglet89 · 21/01/2026 18:05

Iris. And all the boy names that sound like Victorian orphans (eg Stanley)

Yes lots of old fashioned boy names around that you’d never have heard 25 years ago:
Stanley
Archie
Alf
Ronnie
Ray
Frank
Albert
Bertie
Arthur
Elias
Silas
Ivan

But then there’s a death of the ones that were popular when I was young. Doubt you get many babies called Dean, Darren, Wayne, Ryan, Kevin or Jordan anymore. Even more classic names are on the wane like Andrew, Christopher, Philip, David and Nicholas.

I think Margaret is due a revival.

A colleague has an Ada, I feel that is pushing it a bit.

Ada's a top 40 name in England and Wales, there's one in DC's class. I prefer Ava.

I do wonder when or if Beryl, Phyllis, Mavis, Gladys, Doris, Sybil etc will make a comeback.

Ophelie and Monette are gorgeous! As well as Genevieve! Three beautiful options!!

Sybil is quite nice and there was Sibyl in Downton I guess. Not too keen on the others.

Other boy names that were so popular and now you barely hear them are ones like Robert, Richard and Mark. And Jason.
And on the girls side nobody is called Claire or Louise or Laura or Jo anymore.

CurlewKate · 21/01/2026 18:57

Back in the day, my mother wanted to call me Emily. She was talked out of it because it was so unusual and old fashioned and I would be teased at school! When my now very grown up dd was born we chose what we thought was an incredibly unusual but beautiful and elegant name. We called her Grace…..

Bbq1 · 21/01/2026 19:10

No one chooses Joyce, Norma, Pat, Fanny or Nigella!

Patricia is a lovely name. I think Christine Lampard’s daughter is called that. Fanny is obvious why people avoid. I think Joyce is nice, as is Joy.

They all seem much nicer than some of the girls names on here (Ethel, Hilda etc 😩). Though Ronnie reminds me too much of gangsters and Alf seems a bit too great grandpa with pigeons (though Alfie is fine).

Not the Dean and Darrens though. Are they more 80s names?

villamariavintrapp · 21/01/2026 19:40

I think Ophelie would be pronounced awfully, or offal-y. Not good.

To me it’s the sort of name that might be ok if you lived in a very large house with grounds (as opposed to a garden). I put that in the posh pile 😁

Patricia is a bit like Barbara, very much an older woman’s name (but not in the frumpy category). So I was quite surprised at the Lampards and the coren-Mitchells choices).
