Personally I like elegant names like Genevieve, also Mary, that never stopped being popular.

Does anyone know any names that used to be considered “old lady names” but are coming back.

my husband is French and he likes Monette after his grandmother

Ida pronounced Eye-dah is the default here. I'm also familiar with Ee-dah and Idd-ah. I can almost see that it might stretch to Ay-dah. Maybe.

The one I know is spelt Ida, and pronounced Edie. I kid you not.

I honestly don’t think you should go for “cute” for a full name-women still have a tough enough time being taken seriously professionally as it is without being called Bunnykins. Potential shortenings that she can lose if she wants to are fine of course! Isn’t Monette short for Simone? The only one I’ve ever met is…..

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 28/01/2026 09:05

we named our little one Harriet! I rarely hear that anywhere

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/01/2026 09:28

The Traitors might have an effect there. I like the name. There was one in the year above me at school who would now be 65. It was unusual then.

ArtichokeAardvark · 28/01/2026 09:30

My daughter is at school with Josephine, Vera, Margot, Elsie and a Harriet. DD's name is Laura. Old names definitely making a comeback!

I actually think Ophelie is a good call.

I rather like Ophelia, but the "I feel ya" thing I think is a real issue. Ophelie keeps the prettiness but avoids that - and, to some degree, the tragic feel of Ophelia.

You are correct, but my point was that it could soon become post of a trend that will date it and see a rise in popularity.

In the same way that Ava exploded, Ophelia is exploding. Parents began to turn to “near” names like Eva, and we can predict similarly will look for “near” names to Ophelia like Ophelie. It’s a lovely name, but Ophelia’s rise in popularity might also make it part of a trend and put a date stamp on it. Not to mention it has the same kind of vibe as Ottilie, which is also exploding, therefore making it even more palatable to the masses.

I mean it’s because it takes a certain number of generations for names to stop being associated with a past generation.

So today’s 20-35 year olds (majority of new mums) didn’t know the Edith’s, Ivy’s, Ada’s, Mabel’s etc because that was our great grandparents names. Few will have any memories of that generation.

The names that came after are our grandmothers names and so they seem old - Shirley, Barbara, Betty, Ruth, Irene. And our mothers names seem mumsy - Tracey, Deborah, Sandra, Karen, Stacey, Anne.

But in the coming generations they’ll likely come back too to be followed again by the Rebecca’s, Hannah’s, Sophie’s, Bethany, Jess’s of the 90s.

Yes. I think a lot of MNers are, like myself, of your mum’s generation. We joined MN when our DC were young in the early 2000s and are still here. You are right that we see names differently.

No, I think there's a generation of names before that which still needs to be cycled through before we hit Sharon and Tracey.

We need Barbara, Christine, Beverly, Maureen, Angela, Simon, Barry, Duncan, Bernard, Brian, Keith, Colin etc before we hit the 70s.

I know quite a few in the last ten years! But it is one of my favourite names.

Traitors Harriet was, i suspect, one of not many in her school!
