His full name would be James to give him options but we'd call him Jamie.

Sigh

What does the name Jamie bring to mind?

A good classic name.

OhDear111 · 14/01/2026 09:03

One of SO many. Not individual. Sorry.

moondip · 14/01/2026 09:03

I loooveee Jamie. Classic but cool I think.

Sigh

Without sounding ignorant, who is that handsome hunk of a man you’ve posted?

MsGreying · 14/01/2026 09:19

There were four of them in my son's class. 2 were actually James. He's 30.

There is an issue with teachers assuming Jamie is short for James. My son did tell the odd one that he was a Jamie not James.

Laiste · 14/01/2026 09:31

Oliver.
Straight away Jamie Oliver.

(not a good thing)

Boleynforsoup · 14/01/2026 09:35

It’s my brother’s name and therefore makes me think of a 50 something man child who has never been a responsible adult in life and has zero life skills. Make of that what you will!

honeylulu · 14/01/2026 09:35

It's nice especially if you're going for James as the official name so he has the option of a formal alternative.

It doesn't seem to have any connotations of a particular social class and is fairly timeless (though less common than in the 80s/90s when it was very popular - I know a couple of young Jimmys now whereas that used to be the "old man" diminutive).

It's pleasant sounding and to my ear sounds like a "friendly" name.

I'm not keen on it for girls though not what you asked! A couple of our younger female staff have been Jamies and said outs annoying because people get an email from you and assume you are a man. One of them was spelt "Jaime" which was her parents attempt to show it was the feminine version. Cue multiple people incorrectly correcting the spelling!

couldthisbe2501 · 14/01/2026 09:36

I love the name Jamie! I know 3 of them and they are all fabulous!

Laiste · 14/01/2026 09:36

I think the best thing you can do for a child is give them a name they won't have to spend the rest of their lives correcting or just having to passively accept that people get it wrong half the time.

Its.not.fun

This does mean excluding some beautiful names - but please everyone - go for ease of use when you're choosing. It'll be bad enough you having to do it for them for the first 11 or 12 years - the kid has to do it for their whole life!

MrsBucketHat · 14/01/2026 09:37

Oliver

Jamie is not short for James! It’s actually more syllables.

The one I’m married to often finds himself being very firm with people that it’s a name in it’s own right and NOT short for James! So honouring DH by sharing his views!

5 and 5

CandiedPrincess · 14/01/2026 09:42

The Magic Torch, but I love the name.

SirChenjins · 14/01/2026 09:42

Outlander, and an RAF chap I once spent a very enjoyable summer with 🤭

Love the name - cool, classic, goes anywhere. Usually a really decent bloke.

Hoolahoophop · 14/01/2026 09:55

Oliver - cocky little Essex lad done good. 😁

chellewillnotbebeaten · 14/01/2026 10:05

Lovely name ❤️ (I was brought up in to 90’s so a very familiar name to me) it makes me think…… Jamie Redknapp or Jamie Oliver ❤️

Calliopespa · 14/01/2026 10:56

To me it's a name either for a toddler or for a girl - and the latter I really don't like.

It just takes a decent, solid name, James, and makes it a bit wet and sappy imo.

It also makes me think Jammy - again sort of wet, sloppy and overly sweet.

I'd stick with James. Jim is quite cute if you need to have a nn.

But above all the use of Jamie for girls has put me off it. I am not sure how or why that started when there are so many nice options. I know a couple of girl Jamies and they are both nasty, which doesn't help ...

nex18 · 14/01/2026 10:57

Jamie Tartt doo doo doo!

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/01/2026 10:59

MotherJessAndKittens · 13/01/2026 23:53

Love it. About time it came back!

Did it ever go away? Ive taught loads of James/Jamies

DiscoBeat · 14/01/2026 11:00

Irs one of the names that you don't know girl or boy so that might be an annoyance for him later?

Calliopespa · 14/01/2026 11:01

It also has a slightly whingy sound: Jaaay-meeee.

Much prefer good old James.

Andthatrightsoon · 14/01/2026 11:02

A magic torch (showing my age!)

scoobs321 · 14/01/2026 11:04

Showing my age here, but 'Jamie and the magic torch' 80s kids cartoon. Jamie is a nice name, feels gentle and friendly to me.

Guttted · 14/01/2026 11:10

Go for the Irish version Seamus (pronounced SHAY-MUS) or just Shea for short.
