Love it. But does it just blend in with the ridiculously popular Olivia? Thoughts?

I think it's nice. A bit retro and not as popular as Olivia.
Quite classic.

roshi42 · 26/12/2025 14:16

Love Olive! There was a little baby Olive next to me in the maternity ward last year 🥰 It is quite popular though. Nowhere near as much as Olivia but not rare. And you’d probably get the same nickname Liv so that’s even less original. In case that bothers you! It needn’t! It’s a cute name for a baby and a chic name for an adult. Like it a lot.

BahMinthumbug · 26/12/2025 14:18

It made a resurgence a few years back, didn't it?
David Tennant named his daughter Olive.
Think it was Emma Stone's character in Easy A.
I still go to Popeye's gf, as I am old but it's okay. I do like Liv though.

Fifthtimelucky · 26/12/2025 14:37

I still think of Popeye too.

I don’t think Olive is nearly as nice as Olivia.
Similarly, I much prefer Julia to Julie and I much prefer Diana to Diane.

Pranksters · 26/12/2025 15:39

I don’t like it at all, I think it’s so frumpy and drab.

DramaAlpaca · 26/12/2025 15:41

I really like it.

DarkEyedSailor · 26/12/2025 15:42

Olive is lovely.

HelenaWilson · 26/12/2025 15:43

I don't like it. Not because I think it's 'frumpy' (hate that word). I just don't like the combination of sounds.

Me too. I like the a on the end of these names.

Problem is Olivia is so overused - and tbh I think there are prettier names ending in an a anyway.

The Ol-iv bit is not really a nice sound. It reminds me of some sort of creature with a very long neck (ostrich?) gulping.

But if you love it, it's fine. It's an actual name. not attention-seeking, easy to spell. Just not for me.

awrbc81 · 26/12/2025 15:47

I like it, much nicer than Olivia

Mosaic80 · 26/12/2025 15:49

I think it’s lovely and has a very different feel to Olivia. My only worry would be that it had a bit of a celeb surge a few years ago (I think Isla fisher and a few others have Olives).

Avantiagain · 26/12/2025 15:53

On the buses.

On the buses.

Hardly a contemporary social more.

On the buses.

My first thought. Poor Olive was hideous with the ugliest glasses and frumpy.

Avantiagain · 26/12/2025 16:17

"Hardly a contemporary social more."

That depends upon the age of the person. I grew up with a parent who described ugly glasses as Olive glasses. I agree that the child's own peers are unlikely to know the reference.

Jugendstiel · 26/12/2025 16:22

I don't like it at all. Why call your child after a small green or brown salty or oily fruit? I think of Popeye and On The Buses too. It's so drab.

I appreciate people's associations with names and stuff, but as the name Olive has revived a bit, the association would no longer be that? I'd like to think??

Funny because I actually hate Olives 🤣🙃 but I can disassociate and I do love the name...

It’s such an unattractive name. I don’t understand the appeal at all.

PurpleReindeer2 · 26/12/2025 16:55

Much prefer Olivia.

Moreteaandchocolate · 26/12/2025 16:56

I like it, but there are so many Liv’s around short for Olivia that it might blend into those.

If you love the name, use it.

That's what I was asking essentially in my post. I feel Olive has a different vibe to Olivia, but on a larger scale Olive does feel like it just blends into the millions of Olivia's that are about.
I love the name. I just love a good discussion also :)

Same here. Olive Oyl or Olive from On the Buses.

Olivia has been 1st or 2nd most popular girls' name in the UK for about 10 years now.
Olive has a totally different vibe and is far nicer, imo, but you may get the "Liv"shortening, which is as ubiquitous as Lily, Izzy and Evie at the moment.
