Yes its a bit dated, but i find it refreshing and at least she'd almost certainly be the only one in her class. Maybe Lindy as an affectionate shortening. Thoughts?

You will. When I started teaching it was all Michelle, Gina, Natalie, Melanie, Belinda etc and I would never imagine a class with Esme, Elsie, Florence, Mabel and Ivy.
Fashions change!

The Florence, Matilda etc I have less surprise with because they date back much further and the goes around, comes back idea seems more natural. Some of these groups of names seem to me a bit of a "blip." Pamela is definitely an old name.

CatsForLife · 26/12/2025 17:51

I LOVE it. I also love Gloria.

ChristmasJumper25 · 26/12/2025 17:52

Sorry but it's a really bland name and smacks of not much thought put in.

I wouldn't give it to my child.

I would say Esme is a blip - it is such an ugly name (imo). Also Enid!
I think parents just want to choose different names now apart from Olivia, Isobel, Lily, Eva, Poppy and Willow
Comes around, goes around.

I love Linda. Know lots of lovely ones. Lin is a cool shortening for a teen and Lindy cute for a child. Not Lynda though as Linda means pretty or cute in Spanish.

Thesofathatwas · 26/12/2025 14:06

My mil is called Linda. So for that reason alone…. no.

Same hahaha

Dollymylove · 26/12/2025 18:00

My next door neighbours grandaughteris called Barbara. She's about 7. She really suits the name 🥰

Dollymylove · 26/12/2025 18:01

AngelinaFibres · 26/12/2025 17:13

This. Visual image of women called Linda....likes leopard print, hen dos, long acrylic nails, rum and coke, bit chunky. Not a name to saddle a child with.

I can assure you I dont look like that 🤣

Calliopespa · 26/12/2025 18:02

Lindy as a short form makes me think of that awful movie, which I think was a true story, about Lindy Chamberlain and the dingo eating the baby? Or have I got that muddled? I never watched the full movie but do remember being bustled out of the room when my parents watched it and I had a pretty clear idea of the feel of it.

😂
nothing like a good stereotype! 😂

jjeoreo · 26/12/2025 18:07

It means beautiful in Portuguese 😁 which is lovely

Allbymyself123 · 26/12/2025 18:08

No.

it was my mums name and she’d be well into her 70s now. She died young - my daughter has Linda as a middle name as a nod to my mum but i wouldn’r have given it as a name: don’t think it’ll come back into fashion anytime soon

SirCameronBridie · 26/12/2025 18:11

MerryAndBrightLaLaLa · 26/12/2025 17:17

Middle aged woman in the 80’s with big hair and Deirdre Barlow glasses - that’s what I think of.

Linda La Hughes!

Unfortunately I hate the name Linda due to one individual and their fucking awful behaviour

dapsnotplimsolls · 26/12/2025 18:17

First thought - Linda from the Traitors. Second thought 'Never stop looking for Linda' but I am old!

Pieceofpurplesky · 26/12/2025 18:17

Looking for Linda. A song about a brief encounter on a train with a beautiful woman - with Linda meaning lovely.

Still a no from me, but Melinda nn Lindy works

cantbearsed247 · 26/12/2025 18:23

MIL is Linda so it's a big no from me, I don't think it will ever come back tbh any more than Nigel will. Lindsay or Lucinda are much nicer.

RaininSummer · 26/12/2025 18:29

I like it. Surely a comeback has to start somewhere or is there a global instruction out there each year 'allowing' certain names?

RaraRachael · 26/12/2025 18:56

@bleakmidwintering I'm 63. Lots of Lindas back in my day. Never shortened either.

Isn't Lindsey the female variant of the male Lindsay?

I'm not keen on names that were unisex or male but which have become more usually female: Hilary, Vivian, Evelyn, Lindsay, etc. Francis/Frances and Leslie/Lesley are slightly more palatable.

Emanwenym · 26/12/2025 20:57

I like it. It was tailing off in popularity when I was born and was a bit of a 'mean girl' name then. Probably too soon for a comeback.
It's far less fussy than Belinda and Lucinda.

If you like Lindy, you could use Rosalind, but Rose/Rosie might be used.

Lynne is nice but also dated.

Emanwenym · 26/12/2025 21:14

Going back to my schooldays Lindsay, Lindsey and Lynsey were in use and were girls. It's a Scottish surname.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 26/12/2025 21:46

Nah

There are so many Lola/Leila/Luna/Lena/Lara/Lilas around that it will blur with them AND sound dated.

That apart it's just not very distinguished - it's just the back end of a name, like Bella

UxmalFan · 26/12/2025 21:47

Never liked it even when it was popular and even though it means 'beautiful'.
Belinda on the other hand - very nice.

Glitchymn1 · 26/12/2025 21:50

There was a Deborah earlier! What’s going on!
May as well get in a Julie, Sadie, Rachel, Louisa, Susan, Leanne, Andrea, Gemma, Kayleigh/Kimberly / Ruth, Tracey, Claire in!
