I'm wondering if any of you lovely ladies could help? Our little girl is due early next year and my partner and I still can't decide on which alternative spelling for 'Ellie' we would like. I'm drawn to either 'Ayllie' or 'Aellee'. Any kind thoughts on it would be appreciated :)

I thought Hallelujah was a suggestion!!

Hey @HushaBabbee- you could actually go with Allelujah on the birth certificate, Allie as a nickname, it’s a bit more modern and culturally diverse than Alison.

OR - keep Ellie but change the surname to Edems? Or Edam?

Ellie Edam has lovely alliteration nice (just watch out for the mean kids calling her Smelly Edam…)

Hang on - you could literally have Alliteration Adams, nickname Allie 😁 Sorted.

This is the way to go OP.

All good suggestions.

I love Alliteration Adams! It gets to the heart of the issue i.e. your love of alliteration. And you can shorten it to Ali/Ally which sounds like Elly.

You can always rely on Mumsnet to find the solution.

I know an Ailie, which is an anglicised version of Eilidh.
it’s pronounced slightly differently though: Ay-lee rather than Eh-lee

Elle-Leigh, LE or Ellii

Well her surname will b 'Adams' so I just wanted the alliteration and Ellie is becoming slightly over used now

What’s the Ellie short for?

Why not call her Elizabeth and choose a different n name?

Or if you want a name starting with A, pick one!

How about EEELLAAAAYYY. Just as your would shout it across the run down playground full of broken glass where she is drinking some Frosty Jack's with her mates and painting her nails with stolen nail polish to celebrate her 12th birthday.

I know this is a wind up, but my daughter has a friend called Aurelia who goes by Ellie. Serious option!

I love the name Aurelia, it'd be a shame to shorten it.

This thread has to be a wind up, but really if a name is overused, don't use it at all rather than using it with a stupid spelling. Most of the time it will be said, she'd still be called "Ellie A" in a class with 3 Ellies because it will sound the same.

KilliMonjaro · 14/12/2025 15:38

I used to know an Ale (pronounced Al-eh) - her full name was Alessandra

RaraRachael · 14/12/2025 15:40

Nobody is going to be able to spell or pronounce your suggestions OP and your poor daughter will spend her time explaining it.

Just don't

You’re just having a boring Sunday, right.

Lovelynames123 · 14/12/2025 15:49

I just saw a post of FB referring to Ameliyah and thought why?! And that's not half as bad as what you're proposing to do with Ellie, please don't saddle her with that!

Tontostitis · 14/12/2025 15:51

There's a Reddit thread for this stop wasting everyone's time

Either looks like you can't spell.

Why give a child such a diminutive as their only name anyway? You should use the full version: Eleanor or Ellen. Then your DD can choose what version she wants to be called.

Grinch11 · 14/12/2025 16:13

You might as well call her Colin than any of the other proposed nonsense. She’d barely get more grief for that than any of the crazy options you have put forward.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/12/2025 22:35

I know they’re often frowned at on here but there’s nothing wrong with alternative spellings providing you can tell what the name is.
Elleigh. Ellee could maybe alternatives.
