Thoughts on baby boy Radley?

My worry is it will get mis-heard as 'Bradley' and that could get annoying by the 10th time. My other children have unheard of names so anything I choose needs to be fitting.
If its not Radley, we like Kit (worried its getting popular though?), Shepherd, Archer and Cove but not 'in love' with any of them. Any other suggestions that fit this style? Find boys names so much harder than girls.
Last name begins with S and ends in a N.

Rum Cove could work as a throwback to the 18 C

Peternell · 10/11/2025 01:48

I also thought of Boo Radley straight away from To Kill a Mockingbird.
I like Kit and Archer from your list.

mathanxiety · 10/11/2025 02:29

I think Radley is too far a departure in style from the style of name you've described for your other children.

I'd go for an obscure biblical name.

Omri
Adlai (has a slight echo of Radley)
Barak
Jethro
Jotham
Ephraim
Nicodemus
Balthazar
Reuel
Cyrus
Boaz
Hosea
Esau
Jabez
Gideon
Zacchaeus
Shem

This. Also Radley is a popular handbag company - first thing I thought of!

That was the first thing that I thought of. Second was Boo Radley in 'To Kill a Mockingbird'.

The other names, which you've given your other children, from the clues given, sound like they are actual names though? Surely you can up with another name similar to those?

Yes, exactly this.

OP, if you’ve used actual given names for your other kids why give the next one a surname? Stylistically it seems like a big departure. Surely you can find another rare given name?

My daughter was very nearly Hero! It was between that and Marcella.

JadeSquid · 10/11/2025 07:01

Boo Radley
Is that the name?

JadeSquid · 10/11/2025 07:02

Boo Radley is a fictional character in Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird. He is a mysterious, reclusive neighbor of the Finch family who is the subject of town gossip and the children's fascination, but is revealed to be a shy, kind individual who saves the children from danger. The name is also shared by a British indie band.

foxinasnowstorm · 10/11/2025 08:47

We nearly called our first born Radley after the band Boo Radleys. Gorgeous name.

MrsKateColumbo · 10/11/2025 09:10

I assume your daughter is Hero?

Radley is ok, Kit is very nice, Archer is nice. Cove is terrible,

MondayYogurt · 10/11/2025 09:54

Radleigh instead?

MondayYogurt · 10/11/2025 09:54

Radleigh instead?

Or go the whole hog and just go for:

Rad-Leigh.

Leopardspota · 10/11/2025 10:00

Reminds me of ‘uncle rad’ on Bluey.

TheJessops · 10/11/2025 10:29

I've never heard of Boo Radley, I don't know who or what that is. But I do love the handbags! If it wasn't for the handbag company I'd actually quite like Radley but people will here Bradley. But what about Bradley as the name?

Shepherd and Cove are not good ideas depending on what sort of community you live in and what you imagine for their future lives, Shepherd will get called Shep, and Cove is a bit bonkers.

Archer is ok.

Kit is a great name I think, but it does seem to be popular on here, not sure if that translates into real life!

Off the top of my head:
Clayton
Endeavor
Randall

VikaOlson · 10/11/2025 10:33

A good tip I read on here about giving unusual names is to go to a Starbucks and give that name as yours when you order.
If you feel silly saying it, or it gets misheard, then you know it's unfair to give it to a child.

lostintranslation148 · 10/11/2025 10:57

Kit and Archer are ok IMO - I do have a Radley handbag though! Got it off ebay.
,
Kit doesn't really go with Hero though IMO. Archer works better I think but I'd go with something posher, Caspian, Tristan, Sebastian, Lysander, Xavier, Gabriel.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 10/11/2025 09:59

Or go the whole hog and just go for:

Rad-Leigh.

Are you trying to be nasty?

How odd.

YourWinter · 10/11/2025 11:54

Kit, perhaps, as a diminutive for Christopher. The other names are truly awful, just beyond silly. Are you trying too hard to be edgy and cool? Don’t, your kid has to live with your insecurities.

Fridayismyfunday · 10/11/2025 11:56

Zov · 09/11/2025 16:36

Shepherd, Archer, and Cove as first names sound daft. (IMO, sorry.) Blush

As a pp said, Kit is the best name. Although this is a nickname for someone called Christopher. Not sure if it's a proper name. Though I suppose it could be...

This

PunkApple · 09/11/2025 20:57

It's not Reagan. It's a feminine name on the list that is often believed to be 'masculine' but in old literature, isn't.

I’m guessing Hero

HugoYorway · 10/11/2025 12:33

@TheJessops I've never heard of Boo Radley, I don't know who or what that is. It's been explained in the thread. A quick internet search would have told you who it is.
The book was on the school curriculum for many years.

Starlight1984 · 10/11/2025 13:14

Thoughts on baby boy Radley?

I'm more concerned you thought Shepherd was an appropriate name for a child tbh 😭

As others have said, Kit is the only decent option there.

Shayisgreat · 10/11/2025 13:19

I wouldn't use it but I quite like Cove - feels moody and masculine but I can't explain why.

caringcarer · 10/11/2025 13:25

Handbag. Poor kid will get called bag.
