Thoughts on baby boy Radley?

PunkApple · 09/11/2025 15:40

My worry is it will get mis-heard as 'Bradley' and that could get annoying by the 10th time. My other children have unheard of names so anything I choose needs to be fitting.
If its not Radley, we like Kit (worried its getting popular though?), Shepherd, Archer and Cove but not 'in love' with any of them. Any other suggestions that fit this style? Find boys names so much harder than girls.
Last name begins with S and ends in a N.

I think Radley would always be misheard as Bradley unfortunately, Kit is a nice name, my favourite from yours.

My own favourite weird name is Painter.

I also read about a male model named Lucky the other day, to me it's a unisex name that is unusual but quite cool imo.

For a Labrador

Boo

CurlyhairedAssassin · 09/11/2025 21:22

It all sounds a bit like you're trying too hard to be soooo different from everyone else....

zazazaaarmm · 09/11/2025 21:24

Radley isn't a very nice sound. And reminds me of a bit of a shit village near Oxford with a posh school in it.
Kit (full name Christopher) is much lovelier.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 09/11/2025 21:25

Shepherd, Archer, and Cove as first names sound daft.

As does Radley.

Seriously, @PunkApple where did you get those abominations?

FlorenceAndTheVagine · 09/11/2025 21:30

Oh my god you called your daughter Hero didn’t you.

RavenPie · 09/11/2025 21:33

She doesn’t want names. I could have suggested Nigel and Alistair but she likes things like Cove so what’s the point?

Besides, Axton and Astor are both surnames (Astor a rather famous one) and surnames are often used as given names. Onyx is as much of a name as Pearl or Beryl and I was trying to think of an object name (which she likes) which was less ridiculous than Cove. Frankly I think I’ve managed it. Ovid is a name - he wrote metamorphosis- and it falls in with her sheepy theme. Linus is a name - it’s a bible name (Linus was the second pope after St Peter), and it’s Linus Pauling’s name and Linus from Peanuts name. Nickel is the name of a boy a few years above me in school. I believe it’s a German name but a name none the less in the sense that people are called it and my Nickel was a rather handsome and charismatic youth so I’m fond of it.

Edit - reply to @Sillysoggyspaniel - not just a disconnected rant

shiningcuckoo · 09/11/2025 21:37

I know a young adult called Shepherd. He is delightful and very cool. It suits him. I also know a boy called Dusky. It has really grown on me.

We're not American no. We live in a tiny town in the midlands. 'Normal' names are great and all (my childrens middle names are Florence, John and Madeline) but they just wouldn't fit with their siblings first names; A virtue name, a rare biblical boys name (also botanical name) and a greek mythology name also in shakespeare. It does need to be a bit different. We do like 'word' style names though obviously nothing as ridiculous as Spatula or Curtains.

How about Hadley ?

Olderbutt · 09/11/2025 22:11

As Radley bags show no sign of decline in popularity I definitely wouldn't name him that. I don't think the others are very nice either. There surely must be something else that would fit in with your other children?

PunkApple · 09/11/2025 22:15

Yes, yes I wish to be very very different 🙄 I'm sure all of your children are named Emily, Daniel and other such simple names which are one of many in their school. Not all of us wish to do that.
Thank you for those of you that have left suggestions!

Magnus
Stirling

Any of these?

Viviennemary · 09/11/2025 22:21

Not keen but I've heard a lot worse. Agree with handbag brand springs to mind

Autumngirl5 · 09/11/2025 22:22

I just think of handbags too. I like Kit though.

CJones11 · 09/11/2025 22:25

I'm in the minority but I'm a huge fan of different names. As a teacher, there is nothing more drab than the same 20 names being repeated on the register every hour. I almost called my first Noah, and before registering him decided against it. Then, I went to a baby group that had 3 other babies with that name. Part of me wishes I went more abstract with my children's name; whimsical and unique. I'd love to know your other children's names?

Names that have stood out to me for great reasons.
Hadley could be an alternative.
Kit is lovely.
Reid has become a recent favourite.
Iago (Welsh name)
Love Gray for a boy.
Caspian
Rafferty
Hendrix
Florian
Cree
Nolan
Phoenix
Lennon

Your children will have personalities that influence how their names are received:)

So, basically, surnames.
Although, to be fair, OP's suggestions are surnames too.
Although she insists they like to be different so surnames could be a bit passé.

I've got an Emily 🤣🤣🤣

MySilentLions · 09/11/2025 23:46

Radley is a bag. Absolutely not for a boy, can you imagine the teasing?
Shepherd looks after sheep (man and dog), just no.
Kit is meh
Archer is another job title but actually quite cool, the only one I actually like.
Cove is this gen version of River, too try hard.

I’m in north Scotland and Magnus is a regular, not uncommon name - it’s the lasting Viking influence around here! I like it a lot, it’s a strong name!
