How would you pronounce it? I know a Sorrel and I assumed it was pronounced with no particular emphasis on either syllable, like "coral", but she always corrects people that it's SoRREL like "hotel".

That's incredibly strange, I've never heard anyone pronounce sorrel in this way ever and botany is a relatively large part of my work!

I don't mind it but I think there are nicer-sounding nature names. Like others have said common sorrel is used as a salad leaf, but you've also got wood sorrel (different family) which is very beautiful and can carpet old woodland like bluebells do

I like it! It’s pretty but not twee and really unusual but not too out there.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 31/10/2025 20:02

I feel sorry for anyone who's not come across it as it means they've never enjoyed 'Hay Fever' which is brilliant!

I like it OP! I don't think it's any wackier than Willow or Hazel.

Pricelessadvice · 31/10/2025 20:03

I think it’s a gorgeous name.

aperollingintotheweekend · 31/10/2025 20:03

It’s a herb isn’t it? Can also be shortened weirdly - like ‘sorry’

gingertomfromnextdoor · 31/10/2025 20:05

My house name!

I Don’t like it at all.

BerkleyChoo · 31/10/2025 20:12

Too much like sorrow for me.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 31/10/2025 20:14

I think it’s charming

Orlandobaby · 31/10/2025 20:18

It’s a definite no from me… i was at university with a Sorel a long time ago. She was great and enjoyed being single. So much so that I’m afraid her unkind nickname was sore-hole.

Duckyfondant · 31/10/2025 20:20

I also know a Sorrel, pronounced Sorelle. It's quite pretty said that way

wizzler · 31/10/2025 20:28

I like it. I also know a lovely Sorelle

user2848502016 · 31/10/2025 20:35

I like it

KnickerlessParsons · 31/10/2025 20:38

It’s more of a street name. I know of a Sorrel Avenue and a Sorrel Close.

Radiator981 · 31/10/2025 22:53

honestly I thought oh why can’t a girl eat sorrel?! But now you say it does sound pretty. Is it a mushroom or seaweed?

User5306921 · 31/10/2025 22:57

It sounds pretty.

I immediately thought of footwear though.

Justcashnosweets · 31/10/2025 22:57

I love it, dd was almost called Sorrel.

Makes me think of a pig.

Makes me think of a pig too. I had a child's book with Sorrel the pig in it.

Thoughts on Sorrel for a girl?

I really like this name.

RadiatorDrying · 31/10/2025 23:10

I love it. Sorrel Johnson (daughter of Richard) was a great actress.

PragmaticIsh · 31/10/2025 23:15

I love it, and I'm usually really judgy on names!

It's equally good for a child and an adult. It's unusual but not ridiculous or weird. It's pretty and ethereal but definitely not twee or tacky.

mellicauli · 31/10/2025 23:18

I do like it. But you know it will be Soz for short?

justthisonenight · 31/10/2025 23:19

i think it's beautiful! <3

MirandaBlu · 31/10/2025 23:26

The one I know is - probably atypically - male, and German. Rhymes, roughly, with laurel. I think it's relatively rare and not to everyone's taste, but it is a legitimate name with a history of use for both girls and boys. I don't find it any odder or less appropriate than, say, Basil or Bay or Fern or Rowan or Saffron or Sage.
