Other ones I've shortlisted are :
Ruth-Ann (after my gran)
Roxanne (after childhood bestie)
Skyla-Rose (love the name Rose)
Ariella (sounds very girly and pretty)

Thoughts?

My first reference for the name Ariel would be The Tempest. I wouldn't think of it as a exclusively Jewish name any more than Benjamin or David or Rebecca. There's a long history of Biblical Hebrew names being used in the UK.

Saxendi · 20/10/2025 14:19

Aurelia or Rosanna, with Rosie for short.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 20/10/2025 16:24

@JaninaDuszejko ,but you're comparing a name that isn't much used in the UK with names tha have been extremely popular for decades.
Ariel David
Ariel Sharon - Wikipedia

I'd compare it to something like Binyamin not Benjamin.

Catpiece · 20/10/2025 16:44

Reminds me of a cowgirl

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 20/10/2025 17:45

Don't like the hyphenated names.

If you really love Lexi-Mae, call her Alexandra Mae and use Lexi-Mae as a nickname.

It’s chavy, Roxanne always makes me think of the song about the prostitute. Skyla is also super chavy. If you love rose go for rose, or just Ruth. You could do Ann as a middle name then she can opt not to use it

Lexi-Mae and Ariella - the worst options.

Ruth and Skylar are fine as first names. I’d use Ann or Rose as the middle name. I’m not keen on first names with a hyphen. Roxanne is fine too.

I'm just saying that the Jewish men's name isn't the top reference for Ariel in the UK. Depending on age and education most people would think of one the following: Sprite in The Tempest, washing powder, Disney's Little Mermaid. All pronounced differently from Ariel Sharon's name. Ariela I'd only hear of because of the character in the kids' cartoon Tree Fu Tom. So I don't think most people would think 'that's a Jewish name', because the Jewish population in the UK is very small (0.5% in England, 0.1% in Scotland), and so the cultural impact is much smaller than that of larger ethnic groups. And even though most of us know e.g. Priya is an Indian name you get threads on here of people wanting to use it because it's a pretty name that is well known in this country. There's nothing wrong with using names from different cultures, and if it was OK for Shakespeare to use Ariel for a character in the 17th century then surely it's OK for a parent to use the feminine version for a child in the 21st century.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 21/10/2025 10:54

@JaninaDuszejko There's nothing wrong with using names from different cultures, Debateable. Priya might cause someone to assume that she is part-Indian.

There are many names that Shakespeare used that would not work if they were modified for the opposite sex.

Aligirlbear · 21/10/2025 11:07

No to any hyphenated name - don’t age well and very little chance of it being used as your DD becomes a teen / adult and really not in the work place - consider how your child will feel having to explain their name / constantly correct people who think it’s just a first and middle name. Also a pain on applications for legal documents etc. think passport and plane tickets not matching as one example. Certain countries are really hot on this and it could lead to refusal of entry.

Of the names you have listed Ariella or Roxanne. Both are likely to be shortened to Ari and Roxi respectively - do you like the sound of those ?

DuchessOfNarcissex · 21/10/2025 11:18

@Aligirlbear , I know someone a few years older than me who had a hyphenated name, and he went with the first name. The name without the hyphen was a conventional one at the time, but with both parts with the less conventional spelling (e.g. Kevan-Jon). He was a sensible person, a bit square if anything.

Bowling4soup · 21/10/2025 11:27

Ruth
Ann/Annie
Roxanne
Skyla
Rose

all lovely names as they are. I wouldn’t hyphenate at all. You can add a middle name instead?

Toadetta · 21/10/2025 12:58

Roxanne Mae, Roxie for short? No hyphen!

JaninaDuszejko · 21/10/2025 13:47

Debateable. Priya might cause someone to assume that she is part-Indian.

So?

Viviennemary · 21/10/2025 14:15

Lexi Mae is totally dire. Dreadful. Not overkeen on the others

HarryPottersSecretSister · 21/10/2025 14:20

If you love Rose, why not just 'Rose'?
(absolutely gorgeous and timeless imo)

tinofbeans · 21/10/2025 14:41

All are chavvy.

Ttcwpcos · 23/10/2025 15:10

Up to you what you go with at the end of the day, however, as someone with a hyphonated first name, I hate hyphonated names.

I love the name Ruth, would you consider Ruth as a first name and Ann as a middle name? I also like the name Lexi.
To be honest I like most of the names you have said (except Roxanne but only becuase it reminds me of the song from mulin rouge). I would just opt for using the second parts of the names as middle names. Most people will drop that part out of names anyway, or they did with me. I rarely got my full hyphonated name.

CharlieKirkRIP · 23/10/2025 15:15

Lexi-Mae - beyond hideous.

Ruth-Ann (after my gran) Ruth with Ann or Anne as the middle name is fine. Hyphenated is awful.

Roxanne (after childhood bestie) - bestie is a word that should be put in Room 101. I sing like the name Roxanne.

Skyla-Rose (love the name Rose) - HORRIBLE. Rose on its own as either a first or a middle name is lovely. Used with a open it is utterly horrid.

Ariella (sounds very girly and pretty) The best one out of your awful choices but still not great. What about Marielle?

40andlovelife · 23/10/2025 15:30

Lexi reminds me of a stripper name, always has

ohyesido · 23/10/2025 15:33

Roxanne is beautiful and timeless.

Lexie-mae is horrible and hurts my eyes.

Ariella is old fashioned, what’s wrong with Arielle?

DuchessOfNarcissex · 24/10/2025 10:06

@ohyesido , Roxanne is beautiful and timeless. To you. Not to me.
Lexie-mae is horrible and hurts my eyes. I agree.
Ariella is old fashioned, what’s wrong with Arielle? You have a point.

Clearinguptheclutter · 24/10/2025 10:16

Awful, sorry

why the hyphen? Just why?
Lexi on its own not too bad, ditto Ruth

Ariella is nicer. Aurelia nicer.

KayEmAy · 24/10/2025 20:46

I actually really like Lexi-Mae and Skyla-Rose!

pilates · 24/10/2025 20:49

Awful

not keen on the others either

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 24/10/2025 21:43

I like Lexi-Mae and Skyla-Rose, but having seen a few names threads on MN I don’t think they will be popular with other posters. Your baby, your choice though.
