My name has a male and female variant
It was number 36 the year I was given it
It was acceptable in the 80s
It's a bit French
It's also a little bit Essex
Most people shorten it

I have had every male teacher with the exception of two, sing this famous hit song with my name as the title within a week or two of class starting, my entire life. I am old.

Eileen!

I spent my whole childhood with people saying "but that's a boys name!"
It's spelt like the French for like/love.
When I was at school the other kids used to all sing the theme tune to a cartoon at me about a boy and his dog and his magic light.

Jaime?

Gloria?

Yes, that’s it! My next clue was going to be that my namesake was on the Graham Norton show last week.

mine is biblical. Very unpopular when I was growing up in the 70's.

More popular recently, starts with an A and ends with a L

Roberta?

Nope. But I can’t figure out the Roberta logic. Someone else guessed that.

Is it scarlet film star = Robert Redford?

My clue isn’t as clever as that. A couple of others guessed straight away.

A very famous female singer has my name. She’s the first person you think of when you hear my name. Fairly uncommon. I don’t think there’s ever been a period in time it’s been popular, and I don’t know anyone else with the name

I was thinking of Ave Maria, with Maria Callas and Maria McKee.

I can’t think that Mariah would fit your clues, but just in case!

No, it’s just been guessed as Gloria. 😇

Mia - last two letters the same
Maria - last three letters the same.

I think they’re thinking uncommon and also a boy’s name, and missing out the last clue.

Edited

No, she’s known only by her first name

No, that’s probably one of the names I’d prefer my own to. @Glowingup has probable come the closest to it with one of her guesses.

I can think of a terribly well spoken actress and a cartoon character from the 80s with the longer version, and a singer’s wife and a character in a sitcom with my version.

Penny/Penelope?

Nope

I’ve always known my name was too old for me, it was popular about 20y before I was born and ages ne. I’ve just looked and in the uk most people with my name are aged 75-93, I’m 58. I hate it. My mum was only 23 when I was born, so I have no idea why she didn’t give me something more modern.

Which would make far more sense than Mariah 🤦‍♀️😂

I’ve just seen the average age for my name in Baltic countries is only 21, I’m moving!!!

EmeraldDreams73 · 14/10/2025 23:00

I was born in the 70s, my middle name had to be either Louise or Jane by law it seems, I was always one of several in every class at school, and these days I have 17 women with the same name in my phone contacts!
