My name has a male and female variant
It was number 36 the year I was given it
It was acceptable in the 80s
It's a bit French
It's also a little bit Essex
Most people shorten it

Closer

the long name has IMO a better nickname that is actually in the name. Whereas my name isn’t.

There are 3 ways to spell my name and it was popular in the 70’s and 80’s. Lots of women who have this as their first name, have Louise as their middle name.

Claire?

Yes you got it, it’s Camelia.

Beautiful name

Mines the name of two Queens, but spelt differently. Not wrong, just the french way ( my mum says)

Mine used to be typically irish surname. Can be more common as a boys name in other countries. I was one of 3 girls with my name at school in the early 90s. Commonly goes with Anne as a middle name. Was the name of a tv soap character in the late 70s when i was born.

Lola?

No. Mia was closer.

There are two famous singers with my name. It’s a word in Latin, mentioned in Latin Masses (I imagine) and many times in church anthems sung in Latin.

No, but that’s even closer than Mia.

crinkletits · 14/10/2025 22:46

My name is the female equivilant of what you’d possibly call a man with a 1” willy.

mrsschneebly · 14/10/2025 22:47

Very common in the 80s.
Lots of songs about me, both older and more modern. People tell me they love me.

Correct!

FunnysInLaJardin · 14/10/2025 22:50

mine is biblical. Very unpopular when I was growing up in the 70's.

More popular recently, starts with an A and ends with a L

mrsschneebly · 14/10/2025 22:50

GhostOrchid · 14/10/2025 22:27

Ooh… this is fun.

Don’t think mine has come up.

Uncommon without being unusual. I was the only one at my school (born in the 70s).

Lots of different ways to spell it. Also a boy’s name (now deeply unfashionable).

Think of a scarlet film star. Or a pretty woman.

Roberta?

RightOnTheEdge · 14/10/2025 22:50

I spent my whole childhood with people saying "but that's a boys name!"
It's spelt like the French for like/love.
When I was at school the other kids used to all sing the theme tune to a cartoon at me about a boy and his dog and his magic light.

IDontLikeSpam · 14/10/2025 22:51

MudMyNameIsMud · 14/10/2025 22:46

No, but that’s even closer than Mia.

I was thinking of Ave Maria, with Maria Callas and Maria McKee.

I can’t think that Mariah would fit your clues, but just in case!
