Another post from me. Baby is 2 weeks old and we can’t commit to a name still. As per my last thread, we like Kit but are worried about it becoming a trend. We also like Joss, found by another poster on here. Prefer the unusualness of Joss but being mistaken for Josh constantly will be very frustrating. I am willing to consider other options, husband is too relaxed about it and not loving any particular choice which makes it difficult. We didn’t have this difficulty first time around!!

Other suggestions were posted on the last thread but none stood out to us. Criteria is one syllable and unusual. If anyone could persuade me either way with the two names we have, or find a new name we both love that would be amazing. I know we have 6 weeks but I really want baby to have a name soon x

My friend has a Joss. She spends a lot of time saying Josssssssss as everyone just says Josh.

Kit is nice

HelloHattie · 16/09/2025 08:35

Gray, Reeve or Saul.

AmberBeaker · 16/09/2025 08:38

I love Kit
What about Jude or Jules as an alternative to Joss

Sowingbees · 16/09/2025 08:38

Honestly you can not decide based on popularity - because it changes so quickly.
There was one Finn for years in my school, then one reception year we had ten. Then the following year four, then one and now none.

It is also area dependent.

If you love Kit go with in. I think Joss (stone?) will spend his lifetime saying 'no h'

I like Saul and Seth. From your other son's name how about Wyatt?

chalkyc2 · 16/09/2025 08:39

I feel like Joss is more for a girl (joss stone) and male version is Jos (like Jos butler the cricketer but his is short for Joseph I think).

I like single syllable names - my boys have longer but both can be shortened to a single syllable. How about Seth, Jude, Ash, Zach, Fin (hmm not unusual tho)…

CloudNumberNine · 16/09/2025 09:21

I think the Joss/Josh thing would be annoying with new people but fine once people know.

My friend has a teen called Kit and he has had years of being called Kitkat, kitty and a few horrible lads now turning that into pussy. 😔

Thinking of boys/men with one syllable names I’ve known that don’t seem to be too common - Reed, Zeke, Blake, Blaine, Wade, Seth, Gabe (not Gabriel), Brett, Beck

Just go with Kit if you love it! Names go in and out of fashion. I only know one Kit who is 5, but know 3 Joss' and they are 2,5 and 20. Pot luck as to the area you are in!

HugoYorway · 16/09/2025 10:04

You seem to like single-syllable nouns as names @allshook .
Kit (bag), Joss (stick), Banks...

I'm not keen on Kit, Joss is a diminutive, and Banks is awful.

How about:
Heath
Wolf
Guy
Finn
Pax
Cliff
Todd
Clay
Jett
Miles

Whateverwillwedonow · 16/09/2025 10:19

I like Finn as a one syllable boys name.

Also Drew.

I only like Kit as a nickname for Christopher. I wouldn't have it on its own. Do you like Kim? That's unisex so might appeal to you.

I like Joss but would expect it to be a shortening of Jocelyn (again unisex).

Other one syllable suggestions:

Myles
Guy
Giles
Fred
Rex
Seth
John
Frank
Cole
Zane

Mumofgirls2017 · 16/09/2025 11:52

I love Kit. Agree with your thoughts about Joss plus might have to correct some he is not a girl.

Jude

Rex

Frank
Seth
Reece
Jett
Vince
Zach
Rafe
Wren

Taking so long to name a baby is attention seeking! Just pick a name FGS

HugoYorway · 16/09/2025 12:21

@Idontdobumsex , the baby will have the name for a lifetime, so it's best not to rush into a decision when you are undecided and have weeks to register a name. There are plenty of name regrets posted onn here.

@allshook , if you like short noun names, how about Mark. It's a classic so won't date badly, and it's not currently overused.

WaltzingWaters · 16/09/2025 12:21

Kit is lovely and I don’t think I’ve ever actually met another. Go for it!

Joss I think of as a girls name (probably because the only one I’ve heard of is Joss Stone). So that as well as the miscommunication of Josh would put me off.

Idontdobumsex · 16/09/2025 12:22

@HugoYorwaywell they’ve had 9 months to decide on a name…..

ThisRareOtter · 16/09/2025 12:27

Cass?

Crumpets12 · 16/09/2025 12:36

I prefer the sound of kit out of the 2 names.

what about names like Ace, Reid, Bo, Lars, Cole…

Needmorelego · 16/09/2025 12:40

You like Kit.
Call him Kit.
(So what if along the way he gets called KitKat ot Kitty. As long as it's not insulting nicknames can be fun and come and go as a child grows.
My daughter was Pumpkin for a while. A friend was Pickle)

StewkeyBlue · 16/09/2025 12:43

Kit is great!

If you like Kit, go with Kit!

allshook · 16/09/2025 12:52

@HugoYorwayi like the suggestions, thank you.

@Idontdobumsexattention seeking 🤣 to who?! No one’s sat holding their breath waiting to hear our son’s name! FGS, if you’ve got nothing helpful to say, don’t bother posting, bumsex.

OP posts:
HugoYorway · 16/09/2025 12:52

@Idontdobumsex , given that one of the names was Banks, they probably need more time.

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 16/09/2025 12:54

I don't mind Kit. If you like it, go for it.

My favourite one syllable boys names include:
Drew
Shay
Nate
Brett
Sean
Cole
Flynn
