A little different, but what is everyone’s thoughts on the name Banks for a boy?

OP posts:

Er as a first name?

Thought about HSBC? Natwest...

Maybe butchers? Library for siblings?

BarbaraVineFan · 17/08/2025 23:22

nooooooo

imagine the ‘fun’ that school bullies will have with the very obvious rhyme.

Plus, it’s just a silly name, sorry OP.

Gothamcity · 17/08/2025 23:22

It's a family surname here, so I just can't see it as anything other than that. I like it as a surname, sounds just... professional (?!) but I cannot picture it as a first name, I'm not sure it would work. A bank is a bank, why would you want to effectively name your kid after a bank? And obviously the graffiti artist Bansky, that springs to mind, this will probably end up being his nickname! I mean it's not terrible, but it's just a bit strange. But, a name is a name, if you love it, it's not offensive, and if you're going for something a bit out there, he probably will be the only one in school with the name!

Trouts
Vases
Lakes
Trousers
Weights

what’s the difference?

pinkdelight · 17/08/2025 23:31

Yeah everyone loves banks. Definitely won’t be a terrible thing to be named after, plus rhymes with wanks, plus at best it sounds like a butler.

DiscoNights · 17/08/2025 23:32

No. He’ll go through school being called Wanks.

MrsBungle · 17/08/2025 23:33

Awful

mumofoneAloneandwell · 17/08/2025 23:33

Veto

Sorry girl x

Alexandrine · 17/08/2025 23:35

You know what teenage boys can be like - he’s going to probably have to put up with being called “Wanks” instead by some. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, as I’m guessing it’s a family surname that you want to use as a first name? Keep it as a middle name instead in that case.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/08/2025 23:41

My thoughts are that it’s really not a name, and that it wouldn’t be a good one. PP have given various objections already.

ZestyBear · 17/08/2025 23:45

His nickname will be Wanks or Sperm.
So no.

DramaAlpaca · 17/08/2025 23:48

No. Not a great choice.

Relaiste · 17/08/2025 23:57

I met a Banks at a toddler music class - I thought it was unusual but certainly not the most "out there" name I've heard (we're in central London so we encounter names from all kinds of ehtnicities). His parents were American and I just assumed it was more common over there.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 18/08/2025 00:02

Eek no, please no.

CarpetKnees · 18/08/2025 00:13

Don't be ridiculous.

It is a surname or a collective noun for high street financial institutions, or the things at the sides of rivers.

It is not a forename.

JillyGiraffe · 18/08/2025 01:42

Makes me think of a butler! So many lovely forenames out there…

cheesycheesy · 18/08/2025 01:44

What’s with the stupid made up names

Pemba · 18/08/2025 01:47

No, don't be silly. Pick an actual first name for your child's sake. There are so many lovely ones, why on earth would you be considering 'Banks', WTF?

NeverOneBiscuit · 18/08/2025 01:47

No.

Building Societies?

Shops?

Stations?

Banks?

REDB99 · 18/08/2025 02:10

The desire for a ‘unique’ name has reached new levels of ridiculousness. Just call him James and let him get on in life without a bizarre name.

Avocadohoho · 18/08/2025 07:04

It’s an American thing. I’ve seen it used on instagram etc. Using random words as names.

Duckies · 18/08/2025 07:39

Sounds like a butler (or nanny), sorry.

Cinaferna · 18/08/2025 09:21

I only know one Banks. He's an outstanding dancer, so I associate it with him. And Banksy, which makes me think it's quite a creative name. But I don't like it very much without those associations because banks: HSBC, Santander etc. Why would you?

thinkagainafter · 18/08/2025 09:23

Oh come on OP Grin

BCBird · 18/08/2025 09:25

If surname u could have Robin as forename 😆
