Gutted local baby group owner and used my baby’s name

I know this is irrational. I don’t own a name. Just seen a local baby group (which I took mine to) announced their new arrival and they have my baby’s name. A name I’ve not made up, spelt properly but never met one of and isn’t particularly popular and hasn’t ever been. I think maybe around top 250 and not higher. Midwives saying how nice and never had one before, and the women who registered the birth! I’m really gutted, can’t help but irrationally think if I’d not gone maybe their child would be called something different. Hope the child is at a different school as they’ll just be in the same school year. I hated that I was one of loads of “my name” at school.

tried to edit as obviously the title is illegible

also I guess I am worried with the popularity of the classes will there be a local spike in this names popularity

You know you’re being a bit mad, OP. I gave DS a name so little used that in his birth year name statistics, the number of babies with that name wasn’t listed, meaning there were three or fewer. Yet there’s another on his football team, born in another country .

BlaBlaBlaBlaBlaBlaBlaBlaBlaBla · 23/08/2025 23:56

You’re being a bit silly!

Babyname101 · 23/08/2025 23:56

Yes completely mad! Night feeds aren’t helping! Daren’t share the how neurotic I’m being with anyone in RL. Very disappointed though. You made me feel better. Thanks. Will work further down the ONS list if we have another.

Joking about working further down the list…

TryingAgainAgainAgain · 24/08/2025 00:00

I get, OP. It is annoying, especially if it appears you've 'inspired' her.

You're hardly going to say anything, and it's OK to just feel how you feel. Being told you're silly is unnecessary.

Alwaysoneoddsock · 24/08/2025 00:01

It’s ok to feel a bit sad about it. It would annoy me too. It must be a beautiful name for someone to copy it.

Night feeds would drive the sanest person mad! I hallucinated that the floor was talking to me.

Wait until they're here 😍

Boy or girl or team 🟡? Either way you'll find your baby's name or it'll find you 😊

One of the women in my antenatal class named her baby the one I said I'd picked for mine. Hers was born a few weeks before mine too. I didn't see her but no big deal. I took it as a compliment to my taste.

Applebun · 24/08/2025 00:07

You don't own a name!

If she got influenced by you, so what. We all get influenced by each other.

If i have a daughter i want to call her the name of a girl i used to babysit in spain

NothingbeatsaJet2holiday · 24/08/2025 00:11

It's likely a coincidence but if the name is Leon like my baby sensory leader just announced for her new baby, yabu as it's not as rare as you think.

I know at least 3 in the area and a few more that are a little older too.

I get why you're feeling this way though as I had similar feelings when someone used my "rare" name that I chose for DS. I quickly got over it though and I no longer see this person. Looking back It was all a bit silly really.

TheaBrandt1 · 24/08/2025 00:20

I’d be flattered! Dds friends nanny had a baby and used dds quite rare name. She’d spent quite a lot of time with dd when she went to her friends house they were mid primary so the nanny clearly thought dd was a nice child.

JW13 · 24/08/2025 00:21

I had this OP. My DS’s name is very similar to yours in terms of popularity - not made up, spelt correctly etc. Just not hugely popular although there are a couple of celeb’s kids with the name (I only knew of one at the time). Went to baby swimming and a baby/Dad from another slot was doing a catch up class and when DS’s name was called out the Dad answered! I was worried there would suddenly be an influx of DS’s name kids and he’d be inundated at school when I’d deliberately chosen a not popular name!

DS is now 7.5 and we’d not met another kid with his name until we went to a birthday party a couple of months ago and there was another boy with the same name plus a boy with a very similar shortened name (think 2 Annabelle’s and an Annie). It was a bit discombobulating! I’m hoping the kid with the same name was the baby swimming one and there isn’t a third one lurking nearby! (Joking, kind of)

That's not what illegible means.

OtherS · 24/08/2025 00:25

It might just be growing in popularity. My parents chose a name they thought was really rare, it wasn't even in the top 100. The year I was born it went to no. 1. I can't remember many classes or activities in or out of school when there wasn't another one of me. After all, not so long ago Charlie, Harry, Ava and Olivia weren't that common. I don't particularly mind having a common name, though it does age me now! I think it's unlikely your child will care.

No it’s no Leon. I’ve met a few of them myself, both adults and also children as worked in a school for a few years.

😂 I mean one of the other people who runs the class does constantly get my child’s name wrong and calls them “wayne” instead of “Zane” so perhaps they’ll get it right now?

real names have been changed

OP posts:
Spookyspaghetti · 24/08/2025 00:36

I’m the opposite, I chose an out of fashion name and am desperately trying to influence people to follow suit but failing miserably. 😆 Everyone around here seems to be called Arlo, Brody or Belle atm.

I thought it was interesting what someone said about their parents thinking they had picked a name outside the top 100 hit that year it went to number 1. We are very subtly influenced by what is going on around us. I know lots of people hear a name on a popular tv show, for example, and name their child that way.

Try not to worry though

NightPuffins · 24/08/2025 00:40

She might have been inspired by your choice of name. But it’s also possible that wherever you came across the name and liked it is also where she came across the name too.

20 years ago, I gave DD a name unconnected to anyone, never met another, not v popular at all - as a teacher, this is v tricky to find. Cut to now... little girls everywhere with her name.
