Annie is lovely, (older one here). However, I’ve spent my life correcting people (especially Banks, solicitors etc) who insist that my name must be Ann/Anne or that Annie is short for other things Annabelle etc.

Have you had any inspiration, Op?
It is rare that I get through a full 900 comment thread but I did this one. If anything, it’s made me feel broody.

But it’s not Greek, it’s Ancient Greek, i.e. it’s European. Like xylophone.
Or telephone for that matter.

I'd like to think xylophone and telephone could be names like Persephone.
Xy-lo-phon-ee
And
Tel-e-phon-ee

DuchessOfNarcissex · 15/08/2025 16:01

They sound quite poetic, but Telefoni might be needy and demanding, and Xylofoni a bit noisy.

Thispupsgottofly · 15/08/2025 18:09

I think I might have got the emphasis wrong
Maybe xy-loph-on-ee
Te-leph-on-ee

DuchessOfNarcissex · 15/08/2025 18:38

i was hearing them with the same pattern as Per-SEPH-uh-nee.
They could be Leffie and Loffie.

A sibling for Keith, Gary and Carol?

Paula and all those names you mentioned are solidly from my era. Depressingly I fear the next phase of 'Old Lady Chic' is going to be the Paulas, Traceys, Elaines, Jackies, Alisons and Joannes. I can't tell you how old that makes me feel. 😱

DuchessOfNarcissex · 16/08/2025 11:29

@HeadDeskHeadDesk , give it 25 years and it could well be. I think we have Barbara, Pamela, Sheila and Joyce to come next.
