…just out of curiosity and because I’m still in thinking of names for my daughter due soon. Thanks

Persephone, Greek queen of the underworld.

Pronounced thus: Per-seph-on-ee

Four syllables. A bit like Ee-liz-a-beth.

See, it's easy when you know how!

Has it been used since, like in AD times? I’ve not heard it used once and I work in public sector, I thought I’d seen everything!

Please tell me this a joke. As in Eartha Kitt, but spelled differently? They could have at least spelled it her way. I'm really hoping this is a joke. Please let it be a joke.

Not a joke.

@FlipFlopVibe , Babies called Persephone in England & Wales since 1996
@RavenhairedRachel , very pretty but it's almost Elizabeth Elizabeth.

It sounds like Purse and Phone

Just leaving the house - “have you got your Persephone?”

Only if you are pronouncing it incorrectly. It's per SEFF o knee. Like Hermione. Which also doesnt rhyme with phone.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 12/08/2025 10:58

@FlipFlopVibe , it doesn't sound like Purse Phone. It's
Pur-SEF-uh-nee.

I know a gorgeous spaniel named Persephone with the rather prosaic nn of Percy.

I am surprised that so many ppl haven't heard of it

This! I would avoid for that reason alone- they would be constantly spelling it and correcting people’s pronunciation.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 12/08/2025 12:33

@FlipFlopVibe , i'm sure they'd get used to it. There are girls and women with names like Penelope, Hermione and the like.
