Hector or Edmund? Thoughts appreciated! neither are my top 5 but they are where my DH and I sort of cross over …

well I favour : james, Charles, Benedict, Sebastian, jasper.
dh favours: St John, clement, Cecil, Hector. Horatio

I know I’m right. But that’s marriage…

You're doing all the hard work bringing your baby into the world so you can (and should) veto your husband's choices if you aren't happy with them.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 14/05/2025 10:37

Edmund... although I hope that you don't start a trend, because it is a name that I would consider for a future DS!

SorcererGaheris · 14/05/2025 11:22

Edmund is one of my favourite names, so it gets my vote!

HoopyGirl · 14/05/2025 13:30

Edmund is a wonderful name!

I do like Hector as well.

good choices 🙂

Dear god , is your OH landed gentry , if not don’t let him anywhere near a babies name .

Viviennemary · 14/05/2025 13:47

Both awful. Edmund a bit less dire.

Pemba · 14/05/2025 14:01

St John, Cecil and Horatio? Seriously?? Especially St John (pronounced sinjin I presume?) You just can't name the poor child that! Is your husband what they used to refer to as a Young Fogey? Or an Old one, for that matter? Is he a friend of Jacob Rees Mogg?

Agree with pps, you should be the one to choose. I like Edmund, makes me think of knights in armour. It's actually nicer than Edward. Hector, nooo. It's just harsh, makes me think of the old kid's TV show Hector's House (Hector was a dog I think), then as pps mentioned, the verb 'to Hector' which is negative.

I know a late teenage Hector. He is fabulous, but he friends continually addressing him as ‘Hec’ (or occasionally as ‘Flippin’ Hec’) would do my head in.,

I also know a teenage Hector, known as Flip. I still prefer it to Edmund though.

Love Jasper OP.

Jeeze Louise!! Do not, under any circumstances let your DH decide 🙈

UseNailOil · 15/05/2025 07:16

Both gorgeous! Sorry, can’t help you!

DefinitelyMaybe92 · 15/05/2025 07:17

Edmund

HarryVanderspeigle · 15/05/2025 09:56

I liked Edmund, but the elephant from Peppa Pig was just too irritating. We are now out the other side of watching that though, so it would have been fine. Hector is also lovely, and as pp pointed out, has aged better than a lot of the other Greek myths names. No marrying close relatives or genocide!

Emanwenym · 15/05/2025 11:03

OP favours : james, Charles, Benedict, Sebastian, jasper.
dh favours: St John, clement, Cecil, Hector. Horatio

From those:
James, Charles - safe, pleasant, I would use
Love: Horatio
Compromise choice: Hector
I'd bin: Cecil
Not keen: Benedict, Sebastian, Jasper, St John (Saint a bit much), Clement

Suggestion: Victor

ZiggyZowie · 15/05/2025 11:04

Neither, they're awful

Astrabees · 15/05/2025 11:14

Hector! A really cool name.

Reddelilah · 15/05/2025 14:12

I don’t like either.

How about
Reuben
Quentin
Vincent
Magnus

Firebird83 · 15/05/2025 21:31

I really like both, but prefer Edmund. What about Robin?

RuthW · 15/05/2025 21:58

Hector.

i don’t love Edmund but love Edwin.

GiddyCrab · 15/05/2025 21:59

Edmund.
Hector is terrible!!

Charlotte120221 · 16/05/2025 17:51

Your husband likes StJohn?! Wow.

Pigsears · 20/05/2025 11:24

You lists are a little similar... I don't like Edmund. It sounds like rolling thunder in my head. And is always someone with a blocked nose.

I like Hector. A lot.

Rory, Roscoe, Leonard, Xavier, Alexander...

AnneMarieW · 20/05/2025 17:20

Your husbands taste in names is… brave to be polite🤣

Like others I prefer timeless Edward but of the two, then still Edmund over Hector I think. If your DS doesn’t like Hector then he’s stuck but Edmund gives him options- I especially like the Ned nn.

Charlottejbt · 21/05/2025 11:43

WetBandits · 14/05/2025 00:12

Ooh, I love both! I think Hector has the edge for me, though.

I also liked Victor for DS, but he looked nothing like a Victor when he was born Grin

We have the same taste! I'd also go for Hector, because I love Greek hero names. Edmund is also great.

timoteigirl · 21/05/2025 17:54

Love both. Getting Heathcliff type vibes. Another suggestion Silas.

It sounds like you like the same names as us. We used one of those for DS and DD would have been an Edmund if she had been a boy. There are Edmunds in Shakespeare and lots in history including the Anglo Saxons. I love Hector but DH vetoed.

We also considered: Tristan, Tobias, Fabian, Louis
