Opinions on the name Camilla / Millie

Our baby girl is due next month, and we were 100% set on the name Camilla, with the nickname Millie.

full name would be: Camilla Marie Surname

we have had everything personalised for her and her name put on her wall in her nursery, and we have been referring to her as her name since I was 15 weeks (we will most likely call her Millie most of the time) we have always loved the name Camilla but all of a sudden a couple of older family members have made really horrible comments about it and have said we are naming our baby after the countries most hated woman (The Queen consort) now I’m worried will everyone have that association and think it’s a horrible name?

thoughts would be really helpful

Well yes, I'd assume you were naming her after the Queen too.

What about Camille as an alternative?

CombatBarbie · 29/04/2025 17:51

Apparently I named my dd after miley Cyrus.... the use of Camilla has risen in last few years. Her PR team appear to have done their job.

GroovyChick87 · 29/04/2025 17:51

I really like it. It's a beautiful name and one you don't often hear. I wouldn't assume it's about Queen Camilla.

BottleBlondeMachiavelli · 29/04/2025 17:55

You’re obviously set on the name, and if you are that sure about it, I wouldn’t let other people’s opinions put you off.

It is unusual, and Queen Camilla is therefore by far the most well known Camilla, but that’s neither here nor there if you love it.

Really not keen on Camille and it’s pronounced KAH-MEAL which I don’t like and don’t think Millie comes very naturally from

I really like it. It's a bit posh but still nice. I wouldn't think of Queen Camilla.

We really do like it, just don’t want to give her problems later in life with the name, the Queen consort isn’t the only Camilla, Millie mackintosh from made in Chelseas full name is Camilla x

I feel like it’s mainly older people that have a negative association with Queen Camilla,
we are in our 30’s

I really like it. Are people all that bothered about the royal family? There are plenty of other Camillas.

Marmiteontoastgirlie · 29/04/2025 18:07

Ignore your family! I wouldn’t assume or even really think you had named her after Camilla, as that would be an odd thing to do. Same way I don’t look at baby Harry’s and imagine they’re named after Harry and wouldn’t think a baby Meghan was named after THE Meghan. Your baby will be their very own version of Camilla and no one will think of the Queen when they hear use it to refer to your daughter.

Moier · 29/04/2025 18:07

I love it.
I love Queen Camilla too.. she's a wonderful woman.
Not hated...
My friend who is 70 is called Camallina .. l love that name too.

MrsMitford3 · 29/04/2025 18:08

I think it is a lovely name. Classic and pretty.

Like pp's have said there are lots of ppl named Camilla.

I hardly think Queen Camilla will be relevant by the time your child is old enough to know!!

TimeForTeaAndToast · 29/04/2025 18:09

Do people really hate Queen Camilla?

Hattysbackpack · 29/04/2025 18:10

I love the name Camilla, it is one of my absolute favourites for a girl.

Moreteaandchocolate · 29/04/2025 18:10

I like it - especially with the nn Millie, which feels softer and friendlier for day to day, but she’s still got a good, solid formal name if she needs it one day. I might briefly think of Queen Camilla but that would fade once I met someone called Camilla. I also quite like the nn Cami.

I also don’t mind queen Camilla, not that we are naming her after her at all, but I definitely don’t have a negative association and feel like there are other Camilla’s I did have a friend at school called Camilla too x

I’ve always liked it but it is underused. Not sure if it’s because of the queen. She used to be hated but maybe among the older age group.

Horriblewoman · 29/04/2025 18:12

It’s my name so I think you’ve made an excellent choice! I’ve been known as Millie for years and it hasn’t hampered my career at all or seem to childish which is what I normally read on here. I actually prefer Camilla now but it’s too far gone, everyone I know calls me Millie!

Thank you, it’s really important to me that she has a full name for later in life even if she goes by Millie, I have a full name and a nickname and I’m very grateful as an adult that my parents gave me a full name as I use it at work x

I didn't even think of the Queen consort till you mentioned her at the end of your post! I certainly wouldn't think she's one of the country's most hated women.

I think the name you've chosen is lovely. An older relative was very rude about the name we chose for DD1 whilst I was pregnant and it really upset me at the time, however if anything it made me more determined to call her it, I wanted them to know we wouldn't be listening to any of their daft opinions! If they're grandparents then they've had their turn naming babies. You call her what you'd like OP. Congratulations!

AdaColeman · 29/04/2025 18:14

Camilla is a beautiful name.
By the time your daughter is grown up the Queen will be Catherine, so there won't be that association of her name with the Queen.

Minimalistmamaoftwo · 29/04/2025 18:19

It’s a beautiful name and I would definitely use it if I were you! It was actually on our girl list but I have an Edward so al felt a bit too royalist

Fifthtimelucky · 29/04/2025 18:19

I think it’s probably quite a few years since the now Queen was our most hated woman.

It’s not to my taste, but it’s a perfectly good name. If you love it, go for it.

BottleBlondeMachiavelli · 29/04/2025 18:21

FWIW, I don’t think most people dislike the Queen, either.
